Unakite is a true rock: a composite material made up of multiple other stones. This gives unakite its familiar moss-on-brick appearance and makes it a popular lapidary material. The patterns, durability and affordability of unakite have also made it a useful stone for architecture--its most prominent use is trimming on the front steps of the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.!
Unakite was first discovered in the United States, in the Unakas mountains of western North Carolina/eastern Tennessee (hence its name). However, it can also be found on the beaches of Lake Superior, where it was originally dragged by glaciers, as well as washed down from the mountains into rivers in Virginia.
This metamorphic rock is formed when granite is altered by hydrothermal activity. Unakite--also referred to as epidote/epidotized granite--blends green epidote, pink orthoclase feldspar and clear quartz and can contain trace amounts of other materials such as magnetite or zircon. As a rock (not a gemstone or element), Unikate is found only in masses, not in crystal forms.
In general, Jasper is known as the “supreme nurturer”. It sustains and supports during times of stress, and brings tranquility and wholeness. Used in healing, Jasper unifies all aspects of your life. Jasper reminds people to help each other.
The word Jasper comes from “iaspi” a Greek word that means “spotted stone”. Jasper is an opaque rock of virtually any color stemming from the mineral content of the original sediments or ash. Patterns arise during the consolidation process forming flow and depositional patterns in the original silica rich sediment or volcanic ash, Hydrothermal action is generally thought to be required in the formation of jasper.
Jasper can be modified by the diffusion of minerals along discontinuities providing the appearance of vegetative growth, i.e., dendritic. The original materials are often fractured and/or distorted, after deposition, into diverse patterns, which are later filled in with other colorful minerals. Weathering, with time, will create intensely coloured superficial rinds.
The classification and naming of jasper varieties presents a challenge. Terms attributed to various well-defined materials includes the geographic locality where it is found, sometimes quite restricted such as "Bruneau" (a canyon) and "Lahontan" (a lake), rivers and even individual mountains; many are fanciful, such as "forest fire" or "rainbow", while others are descriptive, such as "autumn" or "porcelain". A few are designated by the place of origin such as a brown Egyptian or red African.
Jasper is the main component in the silica-rich parts of banded iron formation (BIFs) which indicate low, but present, amounts of dissolved oxygen in the water such as during the Great Oxidation Event or snowball earths. The red bands, typically more competent than the hematite layers surrounding it, are made of microcrystalline red chert, also called jasper.
This stones colour may vary, and this depends on the dominant mineral that is contained in an individual stone. It is made up of a mixture of different materials, including quartz. The combinations in different types of Unakite are quite diverse and in the case of this mixture. This stone is made up of either Salmon Pink Orthoclase or Red Jasper with Green Epidote, and they have various other inclusions which may be quartz and/or granite.
Unakite Jasper brings together the abundant, nurturing energy of green with the soft, caring passion of pink in one of Nature’s most healing crystals of the heart and mind. It resonates with the frequency of love, compassion and kindness, and is a stone dedicated to balancing the emotional body.
The elements of Red Jasper and Epidote blend beautifully in Unakite Jasper and embody strong, harmonious relationships. Its pink and green energies balance aspects of the heart, lifting spirits when one is down, and helps to release deep-seated emotions in a slow and gentle way. It promotes patience and persistence, and gradually eliminates bad habits and the thoughts and patterns that perpetuate them. It is a great stone for children’s sensitive emotions, and is particularly good for helping them bounce back from sorrow, grief or disappointment. Unakite supports anyone who feels a little lost, overwhelmed, or has trouble focusing on the here and now.
Unakite is said to be a stone of vision, opening the third eye and useful for scrying. It is also believed to be a stone of balance, grounding the self while bringing emotions and spirituality together.
Unakite has a special connection with one’s heart and aids in the deeper understanding of their emotional body. Simply meditating with this stone will help push out those “dead weight” feelings we continue to carry with us. These emotions serve no positive purpose and are taking up your heart occupying space. Unakite helps one push through these hardships no matter the emotional pain and allows one to truly find inner peace. This crystal has a soft touch and will keep you comfortable even when dealing with the most painful emotions. It’s a powerful transformation talisman that is here to not only strengthen your heart, but also bridge the gap where new opportunities await!
Unakite is not a porous stone, but it can be sensitive to chemical cleaners due to its composite makeup. Avoid using ultrasonic and steam cleaning, as unakite can cleave under impact and heat can change this stone's colors. A soft cloth or brush with mild soap and warm water are ideal. Rinse off all cleaners, then pat dry with a soft cotton cloth.
