Palmstones: The Crystal You'll Never Want to Put Down

Crystal Palmstones collection at NaturesgiftsByChris

There's something deeply satisfying about a palmstone. It's not just the weight of it in your hand, or the smoothness of the polished surface — it's the way a good palmstone seems to belong there. Designed to fit naturally into the curve of your palm, these pieces are among the most tactile and personal forms a crystal can take. I find myself reaching for them constantly, and I think once you hold one, you'll understand why.

I carry a wide range of palmstones in my store, spanning everything from rare single-location minerals to beloved classics. Here are six of my favourites.

What Is a Palmstone?

A palmstone is a crystal that has been shaped and polished into a smooth, rounded, flattened form — designed specifically to sit comfortably in the palm of the hand. Unlike tumbled stones, which are small and irregular, palmstones are intentionally sized and shaped for holding. They're substantial enough to feel grounding, smooth enough to roll between the fingers, and beautiful enough to display on a shelf or altar.

They can be used in meditation, carried in a pocket, placed on the body during energy work, or simply held during moments of stress or stillness. Holding a palmstone creates a direct, sustained connection between your energy and the crystal's — and that connection is something you can feel.

Labradorite Palmstone — The Aurora in Your Hand

Labradorite Palmstone

Labradorite is one of those stones that genuinely stops people in their tracks. From certain angles it appears dark and unremarkable — then the light catches it, and suddenly you're looking at flashes of electric blue, teal, gold and violet dancing across the surface. This phenomenon is called labradorescence, and it's unlike anything else in the mineral kingdom.

Discovered in 1770 by Moravian missionaries on the Isle of Paul in Labrador, Canada, the stone quickly captivated Europe and became widely used in jewellery throughout the 1700s and 1800s. The Inuit people had known it far longer — their legends say that Labradorite fell from the frozen fire of the Aurora Borealis, a mighty being striking the stone with his fist to send the Northern Lights into the sky.

As a crystal, Labradorite is considered the most powerful protector in the mineral kingdom. It creates a shielding force throughout the aura, strengthens natural energies from within, and supports safe exploration of alternate states of consciousness. It's a stone of magic, intuition, and awakening — and in palmstone form, that energy is always within reach.

Polychrome Jasper Palmstone — The Desert in Your Palm

Polychrome Jasper Palmstone

Polychrome Jasper — also known as Desert Jasper — is a relatively recent discovery, found in Madagascar in 2006. Named for its extraordinary range of colours, it typically displays swirling combinations of grey-green, rusty brown, chocolate, and mottled sand, often with eye-shaped or circular patterning. No two pieces are alike.

As a one-side polished palmstone, it offers the best of both worlds — a smooth, tactile face for holding, and a natural, raw reverse that connects you to the stone's earthy origins.

Polychrome Jasper embodies creativity, vitality, passion, and action. It has strong grounding and stabilising energies, deepening your connection to the Earth while simultaneously igniting your inner fire. If you're looking for a stone to help you move forward, find new direction, or simply feel more alive in your daily life, Polychrome Jasper is a wonderful companion.

Blue/Green Kyanite Palmstone — Balance from the Border Mountains

Blue Green Kyanite Palmstone

This is one of the most unusual and sought-after palmstones I carry. Blue/Green Kyanite comes from a remarkable vein that runs along the Pakistani/Afghan border — a combination of blue and green Kyanite that occasionally also contains Garnet inclusions. The result is a stone with extraordinary visual depth and a dual energetic profile that makes it genuinely special.

Named in 1789 from the Greek kyanos, meaning blue, Kyanite is one of the few crystals that never needs cleansing — it neither accumulates nor retains negative energy. Blue Kyanite is considered the most powerful stone for balance and alignment, enhancing intuition and enabling rapid energy transfers. Green Kyanite supports physical healing and heart opening, drawing you inward to connect with your deepest truth.

Together in one stone, they offer total restoration — a palmstone that works on every level simultaneously.

Madagascan Septarian Palmstone — A Window into the Cretaceous Sea

Madagascan Septarian Palmstone

Septarian is one of those stones that tells its own story just by existing. These nodules began their life 50 to 70 million years ago as sediment at the bottom of a Cretaceous sea — decomposing organic matter that slowly formed into mud balls on the ocean floor. When the seas receded, the balls dried out, cracked, and were gradually filled with minerals: yellow Calcite, brown Aragonite, grey Limestone, and sometimes white Barite.

The result is that characteristic turtle-back pattern — angular cracks filled with contrasting minerals, each piece unique. The Madagascan material I carry is particularly beautiful, with a strong yellow Calcite content and distinctive stitch-like brown borders that divide the minerals into defined sections.

Septarian is known as the Dragon Stone and the Healing Stone. It is a Shamanic stone, helping us find our true self and understand the mysteries of the world. It enhances self-confidence, encourages patience, and helps release emotions that feel trapped inside. It's a deeply grounding, courageous stone — and in palmstone form, it's a pleasure to hold.

Sunstone Palmstone — Bottled Sunshine

Sunstone Palmstone

Sunstone is exactly what it sounds like — warm, bright, and uplifting. This material from India is an oligoclase feldspar mineral with sparkling Hematite inclusions that catch the light in a way that genuinely resembles sunlight on water. First reported in 1837 by J.D. Dana, it was named for its shining colours and their resemblance to the sun.

Across cultures, Sunstone has been associated with solar deities — Ra in Egyptian mythology, Helios in Greek mythology — and used in spiritual ceremonies from Canada's First Nations medicine wheel rituals to ancient Indian protection practices. Indigenous peoples believed it fell to Earth during solar eclipses, a fragment of the sun itself.

As a crystal, Sunstone is one of the most effective stones for lifting dark moods and increasing feelings of self-worth. It instils confidence, motivation and optimism, and allows your personal power to shine. It's a stone of joy, leadership, and warmth — and holding it in your palm on a difficult day is a genuinely lovely experience.

Silver Sheen Obsidian Palmstone — The Mirror Stone

Silver Sheen Obsidian Palmstone

Silver Sheen Obsidian is Obsidian with a secret. In ordinary light it appears deep black — but hold it under a strong light and a silver chatoyance shimmers across the surface, created by gas bubbles that aligned across the layers during the stone's rapid formation from volcanic lava.

Obsidian has one of the longest histories of any stone used by humans — fashioned into cutting tools, arrowheads, and ritual objects since the Old Stone Age. The Maya used polished Obsidian mirrors to communicate with otherworld entities. The Aztecs wore them as symbols of elite status. Ancient Greeks used Obsidian balls for scrying. It has been called the divine stone, the mirror of the Incas, and volcano glass.

Silver Sheen Obsidian specifically provides a mirror of the inner being — bringing clarity of mind, exposing blockages and limiting beliefs, and offering deep soul healing. It is strongly protective, connecting to the Root Chakra and forming a shield against negativity. It's a powerful stone, and one that rewards those who are ready to look honestly at themselves.
