Panda Calcite: The Rare Two-Tone Crystal From Fujian, China

Panda Calcite: The Rare Two-Tone Crystal From Fujian, China

Some minerals stop you in your tracks the moment you see them. Panda Calcite is one of those. With its striking contrast of white hexagonal columns and jet-black scalenohedron zoning, it looks almost designed — and yet it is entirely natural, entirely unique to China, and only discovered as recently as 2017.

What Is Panda Calcite?

Panda Calcite is an exceptionally rare and unusual variety of Calcite found exclusively in Yongchun County, Quanzhou Prefecture, Fujian, China. What makes it so distinctive is its two-generation crystal growth: the inner black scalenohedron crystal formed first, and then a second generation of white hexagonal columnar Calcite grew around it — encasing the dark core in a bright white shell.

The result is a crystal that strikingly resembles the black-and-white markings around a panda’s eyes — which is exactly how the locals named it. This crystal habit of Calcite is unique to China and remains very uncommon on the international market.

First documented in November 2017, Panda Calcite is still a relatively new discovery in the mineral world, making specimens like this one genuinely collectible.

A Hidden Surprise: UV Fluorescence

One of the most magical qualities of Panda Calcite is its fluorescence. Under longwave UV lighting (365nm), these crystals display a vivid bright pink-orange glow — a hidden dimension that transforms the specimen entirely under the right light. If you have a UV torch, this piece will reward you.

About Calcite

Calcite is one of the most abundant minerals on Earth, with a hardness of 3 on the Mohs scale. It occurs in an extraordinary range of colours and crystal habits, and is found on every continent. Its name derives from the Latin calx, meaning lime, and it forms the primary component of limestone, marble, and chalk.

In crystal healing, Calcite is regarded as a powerful amplifier and cleanser of energy. It is said to clear stagnant energy from the environment and accelerate growth and development. Different colours of Calcite are associated with different chakras — white and clear Calcite is linked to the crown chakra, promoting clarity, higher consciousness, and spiritual connection.
