What Is Peanut Wood?
“Peanut Wood” is one of the world’s most distinctive and sought after types of fossilised wood. It is part of the Windalia Radiolarite, of the Cretaceous period, 120 million years ago that formed in the ancient seabeds of Western Australia. Its striking appearance comes from the borings of marine clams (Teredo worms) that tunnelled through drifting conifer logs before they sank and were slowly replaced by silica-rich sediment.
The result? A rich, dark brown to black petrified wood peppered with cream to white peanut-shaped markings — each one a tiny fossil record of ancient marine life.
Where Does It Come From?
Peanut Wood is found almost exclusively in the Kennedy Ranges of Western Australia, making it a uniquely Australian treasure. Each piece carries the geological signature of the Cretaceous period, offering a tangible connection to a world that existed long before humans walked the earth.
Why Collectors and Crystal Lovers Adore It
- One-of-a-kind patterning — no two pieces are alike. The distribution of worm borings creates a natural mosaic that is endlessly varied.
- Earthy, grounding energy — in the crystal and mineral community, Peanut Wood is prized for its deeply stabilising, grounding properties. It's said to connect the holder to ancient earth wisdom and promote patience and resilience.
- Stunning natural polish — when cut and polished, Peanut Wood reveals a lustrous, almost lacquered surface that makes it ideal for cabochons, display specimens, and decorative pieces.
- Conversation starter — owning a piece of Peanut Wood means owning a slice of deep time. It's the kind of specimen that stops people in their tracks.
How to Display and Care for Your Peanut Wood
Peanut Wood is a silicified fossil with a hardness of around 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale, making it durable and suitable for everyday display. To keep your piece looking its best:
- Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
- Display in natural light to appreciate the full depth of its patterning.
