Mookaite: Australia's Vibrant Gemstone — Rough, Polished & Wearable

What Is Mookaite?

Mookaite (also known as Mookaite Jasper or Australian Jasper) is one of Australia's most distinctive and beloved gemstones. Found exclusively in the Kennedy Ranges of Western Australia near Mooka Creek — from which it takes its name — this sedimentary rock is prized for its stunning palette of deep reds, mustard yellows, creamy whites, and rich purples.

Formed from the skeletal remains of microscopic sea creatures called radiolaria, Mookaite is a silicified porcellanite that has been treasured by Aboriginal Australians for thousands of years. Today, it's celebrated worldwide by collectors, crystal enthusiasts, and jewellery lovers alike.

The Many Faces of Mookaite

One of the most exciting things about Mookaite is how dramatically it varies from piece to piece. No two specimens are alike, and the way it's cut and finished completely transforms its character. Here's a look at the styles I carry in my shop:

🪨 Rough Mookaite

Raw and unpolished, rough Mookaite lets you see the stone exactly as nature made it. My Banded Mookaite Rough Pieces range from compact 156g specimens to impressive 538g chunks, each showcasing the natural banding and colour zoning that makes this stone so captivating. Perfect for collectors, display pieces, or those who prefer their crystals in their most natural state.

✨ Polished Mookaite Slabs & Freeforms

Polishing Mookaite reveals its true brilliance. My Polished Mookaite Slabs and Freeforms range from elegant 100g slabs to a magnificent 555g freeform — each one hand-finished to bring out the depth of colour and intricate patterning within the stone. Slabs are ideal for display, meditation, or as a stunning natural art piece.

🔶 Brecciated Mookaite

A special variety where the stone has been naturally fractured and re-cemented by silica over millions of years, creating a mosaic-like appearance. My Polished Brecciated Mookaite Slab is a striking example — the angular fragments locked in contrasting colours make each piece truly one-of-a-kind.

💎 Mookaite Generators

Cut into a classic six-sided point, my Mookaite Generator combines the stone's natural energy with a form designed to focus and direct it. A beautiful addition to any crystal grid or meditation space.

🔮 Mookaite Spheres

There's something truly special about a Mookaite sphere — the way the stone's colours and patterns wrap seamlessly around the form is mesmerising. My spheres are hand-polished to a mirror finish and make stunning display pieces or palm stones for meditation. A personal favourite is my 319g (5.7cm) Mookaite Sphere 7A — a beautifully balanced piece with rich warm tones throughout.

Mookaite's Meaning & Properties

Beyond its visual beauty, Mookaite is associated with a grounding, nurturing energy. It's often connected to:

  • Vitality & adventure — encouraging a zest for new experiences
  • Grounding & stability — helping you feel anchored and present
  • Decision-making — said to support clarity when weighing up options
  • Connection to the earth — particularly resonant given its deep Australian origins

It's associated with the root and solar plexus chakras, and its warm earthy tones make it a natural fit for anyone drawn to grounding crystals.

Caring for Your Mookaite

Mookaite is a relatively hard stone (6.5–7 on the Mohs scale), making it durable for everyday use. To keep it looking its best:

  • Clean with a soft cloth and mild soapy water — avoid harsh chemicals
  • Store away from harder stones that could scratch the surface
  • Keep polished pieces out of prolonged direct sunlight to preserve colour vibrancy
  • Recharge in moonlight or on a selenite plate
