Sunstone is an oligioclase feldspar mineral with a hardness of 6 to 6.5. It has a triclinic crystal system and derives its name from its warm orange colour and sparkling inclusions. It can be found in Canada, USA, Norway, Greece and India.

This mineral was first reported back in 1837 by J.D. Dana and was named for it’s shining colours being very similar to those of the Sun.

Sunstone is usually coloured from orange to brown red with sparkling inclusions of Hematite. Sunstone has been known as a stone of good luck because it brings light to all situations. Sunstone has been used to remove energy draining cords from other people to you. Sunstone was used by the Canadian Indians in medicine wheel rituals, and to the ancient Greeks it represented the Sun Gods. It was used in ancient India as protection against dark forces from other realms.

It’s rich reddish-orange facets contain all the healing power as the star, which shines high in our sky. It is the representation of Ra in Egyptian mythology and Helios in Greek mythology, both representations of sun gods.

Even further back, indigenous peoples believed that this crystal fell during solar eclipses, a part of our sun fallen from heaven. Sunstone has also been used in spiritual ceremonies and rituals throughout the ages. First Nations in Canada incorporated Sunstone into their medicine wheel healing ceremonies.

By placing Sunstone in the medicine wheel’s centre, they were able to show their patients the healing power of the sun. When contacted by a spirit guide, the stone would change different colours and shine.

Other cultures refer to it as a “phenomenal stone” for its way in which the light changed off its many angles during the day, with some even only wearing it on Sunday.

Sunstone allows you to find ways to make your dreams manifest. It enhances your ability to step forward in difficult situations with courage and enthusiasm. It makes work into fun through zest for action. Sunstone is very effective for lifting dark moods and increasing feelings of self worth. It instils confidence, motivation and optimism which enables our personal power to shine.

When working with this stone, we are working directly in harmony with the archetype of the Sun itself. Truth, knowledge and good fortune are directly in line with this archetypal energy. Emulating solar light, it stimulates openness, warmth, clarity and a desire to share blessings with those around us.

Sunstone is a great stone for those who find themselves in a leadership position as it stimulates strong, moral and benevolent leadership qualities.  Sunstone will help one to focus on the good of all and live in accordance to the free will of all, while bringing along the desire to bestow blessings upon loved ones.

Worry/Thumb Stones:-

Thumb Stones/Worry Stones are smooth, polished gemstones, usually in the shape of an oval with a thumb-sized indentation, used for relaxation or anxiety relief. They are used by holding the stone between the index finger and thumb and gently moving one's thumb back and forth across the stone. This action of moving one's thumb back and forth across the stone can reduce stress. Other names that worry stones may be called are: thumb stones, fidget stones, soothing stones, or sensory stones.

As a folk practise implement, worry stones have many origins. Variations on the concept originate in Ancient Greece, Ireland, Tibet and multiple Native American Tribes. The concept of a worry stone began by the simple action of picking a smooth stone and fiddling with the stone. Native American tribes would continuously give them to younger generations, creating a sense of connection from previous family members. They also believed these worry stones were considered a sacred item and they were extra special if they were made out of quartz.

From the perspective of cognitive behaviour therapy the use of worry stones is one of many folk practises that can function as psychologically healthy self-soothing exercises. Such techniques are imparted at an early stage of treatment, displacing any familiar but destructive coping methods (nail-biting, scratching, lip-biting, etc.) that the patient may have developed. Worry stones are simple and intuitive enough to be useful in therapeutic contexts where complexity and unfamiliarity are paramount concerns, such as when offering short-term treatment to refugees or people with post-traumatic stress conditions.

After a patient has mastered a more sophisticated relaxation script for anxiety management, the worry stone itself can serve as a physical 'relaxation script reminder' - the patient may notice an impulse to use the object, and thereby become aware of their own anxiety. The rubbing of the stone can create a sense of relaxation making the mind more relaxed and generating a sense of calmness. There are also people that may use them during meditation practises, this is known to centre a personepids concentration benefiting the meditation.
