Jade has been the most highly esteemed stone in China throughout recorded history, and was valued for its beauty and powers of healing and protection. An endless variety of gems, vessels, incense burners, beads, burial items and statues have been wondrously carved from Jade, as well as musical instruments and pendants inscribed with poetry.

The purple colour in jadeite, often referred to as lavender or purple jade, is primarily due to the presence of trace amounts of Manganese. While Manganese is the most common colourant, Iron and Titanium can also contribute, leading to variations in the purple hue.

Jade is also one of the most misunderstood of gems. The most common confusion is about the meaning of the term jade itself. There is, strictly speaking, no such thing as jade. Rather there are two different kinds of jade - jadeite (Sodium Aluminium Silicate) and nephrite (Calcium Magnesium Silicate).

All of the jade mined in China is nephrite. Indeed until about 300 years ago the vast majority of Chinese jade was nephrite. Jadeite is the rarer and more valuable variety, and the chief deposits are in Burma (Myanmar), not in China.

Derived from the Spanish word “piedra da ijada” meaning “stone of the flank,” jade is believed to bestow the wearer with many virtues, notably wisdom, purity, long life, and good health. Jade can be classified into two different types, nephrite, and jadeite. Myanmar (Formerly known as Burma) Jade is jadeite and may also be known as Burmese jadeite. The Chinese are great fans of this jewel, consuming the majority of gem production for centuries.

Colour is the most important quality factor for Burmese jade. Consumers traditionally associate Burmese jadeite with green colour, and it surprises them to learn that it comes in other colours as well, such as white, purple, pink, blue, yellow, and orange.

The main body of this description relates to traditional green Jade, however other colours have additional properties.

Black Jade emanates strong, protective energies to ward off negative assault, physical or psychological, including self limitation.

Blue Jade calms the mind, encouraging peace and reflection, and is valuable in promoting visions and dreams.

Brown Jade is grounding. It connects to the earth and provides comfort and reliability.

Lavender Jade alleviates emotional hurt and provides spiritual nourishment. Its energy is of the highest etheric spectrum.

Orange Jade brings joy and teaches the interconnectedness of all beings. It is energetic and quietly stimulating.
