Probably one of the most common incorrectly labelled crystals is Arfvedsonite. More times than not, when you look to purchase Astrophyllite you are most likely buying Arfvedsonite. Seeing these crystals side by side and knowing what colouring to look for will make a huge difference in knowing if you’re looking at Arfvedsonite or Astrophyllite. Some of Arfvedsonite’s other names include Alkali Amphibole and Soda Hornblende. Based on its flashes of colour, some also call it “firework stone.”

The visually distinguishing feature is the colour of each stone’s shimmer. Astrophyllite always has a copper, reddish-brown, or bronze shimmer, while arfvedsonite has a blue shimmer. At a chemical level, astrophyllite is a hydrous potassium iron titanium silicate, while arfvedsonite is a sodium amphibole. Lastly, astrophyllite only ranks at 3 on the Mohs scale, making it softer than arfvedsonite.

Arfvedsonite is a rare sodium amphibole mineral that crystallizes in the form of large masses, small prismatic shards, and fan-like prisms. It ranges in colour from a dark black (with high-flash blue inclusions) to a deep blue or blue-green.

Arfvedsonite is a newer crystal in the mineral kingdom, having first contact with humans around 1823. The man who discovered this mineral and who’s name forever encompasses Arfvedsonite is none other than Johan August Arfwedson. If that name looks familiar it's due to the legacy he left behind, for his greatest achievement in life was discovering Lithium.

Arfvedsonite goes through a long and complex formation process to become the powerful crystal we know today. It forms within plutonic rock, which is Igneous rock that slowly solidifies and ends up becoming crystalized from volcanic magma. Arfvedsonite grows inside this slow-forming rock, adding millions of years to its development cycle.

Astrophyllite is always a bronze, reddish brown colour. You will never find it as blue, silver, or yellow like you will with Arfvedsonite. It grows in a Nepheline Syenite matrix, which is typically an off white to grey in colour. Astrophyllite can grow with other stones such as Eudialyte and Aegirine. Astrophyllite has the chemical composition of K2NaFe2+7Ti2Si8O26(OH)4F (Potassium Sodium Iron Manganese Titanium Silicate Hydroxide).

Arfvedsonite:

Arfvedsonite colour is bluish-black to black. It has a strong pleochroism (change of colour under plane-polarised light) in the colours of blue-greens, yellow-browns, and grey-violets. The dark reddish colour that often grows with Arfvedsonite is Eudialyte (not Garnet). Arfvedsonite can also grow with Aegirine as well as many other minerals. Arfvedsonite has the chemical composition of [Na][Na2][Fe2+4Fe3+]Si8O22(OH)2 (Sodium Iron Magnesium Silicate Hydroxide). It is a basic sodium iron silicate, sometimes with some potassium, magnesium, and fluorine. There are several variations of Arfvedsonite with different elemental substitutions.

Arfvedsonite has a supercharged energy within, capable of calming your emotional body while still maintaining a cool, collective mentality. This is perfect in times of distress, where one must be an adult and handle their responsibilities with a “poker face”. It pushes one to internalize their feelings until they are in a safe space or with a loved one where they can be vocalised. Doing so helps maintain an image of strength, while allowing your subconscious to remain in deep thought. During this time, one may come to the realisation that it is a waste of time, energy, and emotion to hold onto something so minute. This will cause a natural release of negativity (a self purification experience) and give you the ability to laugh or talk about it afterwards with ease.

The frequency of Arfvedsonite connects to the third eye and crown chakras so that one is open to the ‘higher’ understanding of situations. It helps one to be positive in one’s thoughts and actions and not to be drawn to negativity or send out negative thought forms.

Via the third eye chakra this crystal can aid one’s sleep patterns and dispel any negative energy from nightmares, allowing one a clearer ‘vision’ of one’s life’s experiences, and increasing one’s intuitive side.

Arfvedsonite helps us to reconcile difficulties, to see things from both sides and to more easily forgive others. It is an excellent stone for helping to resolve family disputes or work related disagreements. Arfvedsonite helps us to communicate with others more effectively. It develops our sense of awareness and insight. It also promotes courage and self confidence. It can also help us to be less apprehensive, to procrastinate less and relieve feelings of guilt and self doubt. Arfvedsonite further helps in relieving depression.
