This extremely aesthetic, super UV reactive specimen contains large hexagonal Calcite on top of a Sphalerite Matrix. The matrix also contains Dog Tooth Calcite ( Scalenohedral Calcite), and miniature hexagonal Calcite when has then been overgrown with a sugary coating of Clear Quartz. If you look closely on one side near the base you will notice a small green Fluorite crystal. This piece is from the Xianghualing Mine, Linwu Co, Hunnan, China.

This piece weighs 786g and measures 16cm x 10cm x 4cm.

Calcite is clear, whitish, or pale grey, but can take on different shades of grey, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, brown, or even black. Sphalerite is a Sulphide mineral with the formula ((which Zn, Fe)S).It is the principal ore of zinc. Pure sphalerite is colorless and rare. Normally, iron is present, causing the colour to vary from pale greenish yellow to brown and black with increasing iron content. When iron content is high it is an opaque black variety, marmatite.

It is usually found in association with galena, pyrite, and other sulphides along with Calcite, Dolomite and Fluorite. Miners have also been known to refer to sphalerite as Zinc blende, black-jack and Ruby jack. Its complex crystals combine tetrahedral or dodecahedral forms with other faces.
