This material is Cobaltoan Calcite and I have put together a large group of pieces that showcase the variety to be found in this particular material.

This piece weighs 74g and measures 5.5cm x 4.5cm x 2cm.

This material was sourced from the Kakanda region in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and is known by a few names. I will refer to this material as Cobaltoan Calcite, also known as Cobalt Calcite, Salrose Cobalt Calcite and Aphrodite Stone. It is an uncommon variety of Calcite that has Cobalt impurities. Usually the amount of Cobalt within determines how pink the stone is.

There is a lot of variety here but I have priced them all at similar pricing, so there are a few bargains in there is you wish to investigate further. All of the pieces contain some of the associated minerals, such as Malachite, Chalcopyrite and Heterogenite to name a few - happy hunting.

You’ll most likely see this mineral in tiny druzy clusters over matrix, although some areas in Europe have unearthed material able to be cut and polished. This mineral was first discovered in the Calamita mine in Tuscany, Italy. Since then, only a handful of localities have been found throughout the world. The most important veins of this mineral are currently located in the Congo, Morocco, Australia, Mexico, the UK, Spain, Italy, and Switzerland.

Sometimes this material may also be labeled as Dolomite, (which also occurs in the DMC), rather than Calcite and this is possible. Cobalt Dolomite is relatively rare compared to Cobalt Calcite and hence more expensive. Visually these two materials are almost identical and usually a chemical test is required to determine which material it is, so if this is important to you please be aware. Spherocobaltite is a little easier to visually identify, but again is much more expensive.

The history of Cobaltoan Calcite is deeply entwined with the broader story of cobalt mining and its various applications. Cobalt has been used for centuries to create vibrant blue pigments in glass, ceramics, and paint. The mineral’s discovery and study have been driven by the search for valuable cobalt deposits and the pursuit of understanding its unique properties.

Cobaltoan Calcite’s rarity and vibrant colors have made it a prized specimen among collectors, researchers, and enthusiasts throughout history. Its association with other cobalt-bearing minerals has spurred further exploration of its properties and potential applications in materials science. Although it is not a primary source of cobalt, the study of Cobaltoan Calcite has contributed to a broader understanding of the geology and mineralogy of cobalt deposits.
