****Sadly a massive percentage of the "blue hemimorphite" towers, spheres, and carvings flooded across Etsy and eBay are actually blue Aragonite (often sourced from China or Pakistan) or Calcite, mislabeled either accidentally or intentionally to command a higher price.****
Hemimorphite is a Zinc silicate mineral, while Aragonite is a Calcium Carbonate. Because Hemimorphite rarely forms in massive, thick chunks suitable for cutting into large, solid towers, sellers often substitute cheap blue aragonite to meet the demand for crystal points.
Authentic hemimorphite is famous for its Botryoidal, (bubble or grape like clusters) or tiny, radiating bladed crystals. If a tower is 100% smooth, uniform, and looks like solid rock with banding, it is almost certainly aragonite or calcite. Real hemimorphite towers usually have open pockets or druzy vugs showcasing those distinct tiny micro-crystals.
These rare, genuine Hemimorphite generators are from the world-famous Wenshan Mine in Yunnan Province, China. Wenshan is globally celebrated among collectors for producing brilliant Botryoidal Hemimorphite layered over a rich brown Iron Gossan matrix. These specimens have been skillfully cut to showcase the natural Botryoidal formation of the Hemimorphite contained in pockets within the porous, dark brown matrix, which is also often filled with Limonite or Goethite and creates that stark, sought-after contrast.
Hemimorphite:-
Named in 1853 by Adolph Kenngott in allusion to the hemimorphic morphology of the crystals. Many names were previously assigned to this species, including calamine. Hemimorphite was chosen by the International Mineralogical Association, over calamine, in 1962.
Hemimorphite is a mineral that belongs to the Zinc Silicate family. Hemimorphite gets its name from the Greek words ‘hemi’ meaning half and ‘morph’meaning shape, as its crystals often display asymmetric growth patterns.
Hemimorphite is known for its unique crystal structure, which sets it apart from many other minerals. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and forms prismatic or tabular crystals. The crystals can vary in colour and may be transparent, translucent, or opaque. Common colors include white, yellow, blue, green, and gray, with blue being the most well known amongst crystal collectors.
