Blue lace agate is a type of variegated chalcedony, more specifically a variety of quartz. This type of agate is most notably recognised by its predominantly light blue banded layers that have also been known to include bright blue, white and brown hues. Agates typically form as nodules or geodes in igneous rocks. When an empty pocket or hole inside a porous rock fills layer by layer and the molecules begin to crystallise, bands of agate form.

Small amounts of Blue Lace Agate have been found in Brazil, China, India and various places in the United States. This particular material is from Southern Namibia where the vast majority of Blue Lace Agate is sourced from the one main location. Farm 254 Ysterputs, Karasburg West is not far from the border with South Africa.  The area is incredibly dry and barren and rain is exceptionally rare.  Temperatures by day can be almost unbearable but at night they can drop to below freezing.

The deposit where the Blue Lace Agate is found is believed to date back approximately 54 million years. Some claim that George Swanson discovered the mine around 1962 and his name became synonymous with Blue Lace Agate. However, it was apparently discovered by Willy Preiss, but because he lived some 400 miles away in Namibia's capital Windhoek it made managing operations there very difficult.

When George Swanson was given the opportunity to run the mine from his home in Springbok (South Africa) which is much closer, he worked hard to make it a success.
In 1969 a deal was struck whereby Preiss handed ownership over to Swanson.  The deposit remained under his control and was mined extensively until his death in 2010.

With its soft blue colour, it's no surprise blue lace agate is said to be a soothing stone. The circular, graceful banding is stimulating, but still exudes a calm energy. Blue lace agate is said to be a stone of communication, making it easier for people to become confident and articulate. For this reason, it's considered a good idea to wear jewellery with blue lace agate or carry a stone in your pocket when required to speak in public. As a bonus, blue lace agate is sometimes referred to as the Stone of the Diplomat, helping ensure your words are not angry and your meaning is clear. Since agate has a slower vibration frequency than most stones, it is valued as a stabilising gemstone.

Blue Lace Agate is an incredibly soothing and nurturing stone, with an energy reminiscent of a loving and wise mother or grandmother. It dissolves negative feelings, especially anger and despair caused by feeling judged, repressed or rejected. Blue Lace Agate gently encourages us to let go of of old patterns and baggage and to be true to ourselves. It reminds us that we are love-able as we currently are and that who we are is “enough.” This is a particularly good stone for anyone working through parent-child relationship issues or wanting to be more emotionally expressive.  Blue Lace Agate is especially helpful for men who are learning to accept and express their emotions. It is also very helpful for anyone who is exploring emotional issues related to loyalty, trust, and anything which is a “secret” between two people or a small group.

Blue Lace Agate is a wonderful communication stone, helping us find the right words to express ourselves. Equally important, it encourages us to truly listen and hear what others are telling us. It can also be used to examine our own inner dialogues, helping us to think more positively and become more mentally kind to ourselves. It teaches us that when we communicate accurately and lovingly, we are moving along a pathway which leads to peace of mind.  Blue Lace Agate helps us release mental stress and to neutralise feelings like anger or fear which can cloud the mind.  Blue Lace Agate helps us to clearly see what is true and what is false, and to respond accordingly.
