Yinnietharra is located in the Upper Gascoyne Shire of Western Australia and consists of two pits 1km apart roughly parallel on strike north-north west. The majority of crystals found in this location are naturally double terminated. Brown dravite occurs at the south pit, and black dravite in the north pit. A well-known locality for large and well-formed dark brown and black dravite crystals this deposit was discovered in 1918. The Dravite crystals form in Mica Schists which help protect the crystals. Most of the brown dravite specimens on the market come from the mining period (1968-1971), with crystals found sporadically within pods.

Tourmaline is the name given to a large group of boron silicate minerals that share a common prismatic crystal structure and similar physical properties. This crystalline boron silicate mineral can be found compounded with elements such as aluminium, magnesium, iron, potassium, and lithium.

Because tourmalines vary so greatly in chemical composition, we see the widest range of colours and colour combinations than in any other mineral group. Colours range from yellow, orange and pink to green, blue, brown and black. Tourmaline has 3 species - Dravite, Schorl and Elbaite and has 14 varieties. Tourmalines are further named by their colours and are often multicoloured. Tourmalines are naturally pyroelectric and piezoelectric and some are pleochroic.

Dravite is a complex sodium magnesium iron boro-aluminium silicate hydroxide in the Tourmaline group found in granites and granitic pegmatites, high temperature hydrothermal veins and metamorphic rocks.

The origin of the name comes from the Drava River area in common day Slovenia, in which the stone was first reported back in 1884. Gustav Tschermak, who was a professor of Mineralogy and Petrography at the University of Vienna, coined the term “Dravite”.Its colour ranges from dark brown, to a light brown-yellow with semi-translucent crystals almost resembling Smoky Quartz. The best, and presumably rarest Dravite specimens come from the mines located in Yinnietharra, Australia. Other localities include mainly Brazil, Mexico, and Canada.
