”Pink Petal Agate”, “Cotton Candy Agate” and many other “trade names” are applied to this materiel. In the Lapidary community in the USA a material commonly referred to as ‘Youngite’ looks remarkably similar and is sourced from inside the Youngite caves near the Glendo and Guernsey reservoirs in Guernsey, Wyoming. With the USA material however the quartz portion is fluorescent, which is the quickest way to discover whether you have true Youngite. The Cotton Candy stone is not fluorescent, even though it often looks the same.

This material is composed of pink or peach jasper, which has been breccicated over time, the cracks filled in with light pink or cream colored chalcedony. The pink color is thought to be caused by trace amounts of titanium, iron, or manganese. The breccia can appear cloud-like, which is perhaps what led to its “Cotton Candy” name. It is also one of the most recently discovered Mexican agates, first popularised around 2018 and is sourced from the Hidalgo region of Mexico.

Colagates and other chalcedonies were obtained over 3,000 years ago from the Achates River, now called Dirillo, in Sicily.
