Desert Rose is the colloquial name given to rose-like formations of crystal clusters of gypsum or baryte which include abundant sand grains. The 'petals' are crystals flattened on the c crystallographic axis, fanning open in radiating flattened crystal clusters. Desert Rose Selenite has many names. It is commonly referred to as sand rose, selenite rose, desert rose rock, gypsum desert rose, gypsum rose and gypsum rosettes.

A variety of gypsum with a hardness of 1.5 – 2, these mineral roses are formed by the forces of wind, water and pressure in dry, arid regions due to the evaporation of a shallow salt basin. When sand particles become embedded in these basins, the loose sand is trapped in the minerals during the evaporation process and forms rosette-like concretions with unique flower-like crystal structures. Desert roses are found in the Sahara desert, the Southwest of the USA, Australia, Mexico and Spain.

These particular specimens are from Chihuahua, Mexico and although they differ dramatically from the Tunisian Desert Roses in my store they are technically in the same category.

Gypsum roses usually have better defined, sharper edges than baryte roses. Celestine and other bladed evaporite minerals may also form rosette clusters. They can appear either as a single rose-like bloom or as clusters of blooms, with most sizes ranging from pea sized to 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter.

The ambient sand that is incorporated into the crystal structure, or otherwise encrusts the crystals, varies with the local environment. If iron oxides are present, the rosettes take on a rusty tone.

Desert Roses are said to contain a spirit guardian, and each one is different. Because of this, they are useful as protective talismans and can increase your own self-confidence and self-worth.
