This piece weighs 28g and measure 5.5cm x 3cm x 1.5cm.
I have selected this range of Smokey Quartz points due to their partial Druzy Quartz coating, naturally fractured internal structure and the additional bonus of some Specularite growth on quite a few of them. This particular material is from the world famous Huanggang Mine, Keshiketeng Co, Chifeng Prefecture, Inner Mongolia, China. This site is world famous for the amazingly well preserved Specularite on Clear Quartz pieces that is in high demand.
Smokey Quartz is the national gem of Scotland, a country with the longest historical association with the stone. The Celts, who began colonizing the British Isles around 300 B.C., mined the brownish-gray Quartz in the Cairngorm Mountains of the Scottish highlands, calling the dark brown to black crystals they found Morion, and the yellow-brown to grayish-brown crystals Cairngorm after the mountains where they were located. These stones eventually became prominent adornment for Highlander apparel in the form of jewelry, shoulder brooches and kilt pins, and as power stones on the handles of weaponry, especially the Scottish dagger sgian dubh, a “sock knife” which is still part of a proper kilted dress uniform.
The term “Smokey Quartz” was first reported to the gem world by J. S. Dana in 1837 and was named for its color which had been likened to smoke. Smokey Quartz is readily found in many locations around the world. A variety of Quartz, it is a silicon dioxide mineral ranging in color from pale, smoky gray to deep brown and black, sometimes yellowish-brown. It forms as crystals, drusy or in massive form, and its color is caused by impurities of aluminum and natural irradiation of the stone. Though Smoky Quartz can be nearly opaque, it is almost always transparent to translucent. Many gems on the market are Clear Quartz that have been artificially treated with radium or x-rays to turn the crystals dark, and are usually very dark and unnatural looking, often lacking in transparency. Though Scottish named, the origin of the word morion may have come from the Greek term for “baneful or hideous,” or from the French moreau, meaning “black.” The name may also relate to quadertz, an old German word for a bad mineral. In any event, morion is the German, Danish, Spanish and Polish synonym for Smoky Quartz. Smoky Quartz has also been erroneously marketed as “Smoky Topaz.”
In the metaphysical world, Smokey Quartz is one of the most efficient crystals for grounding and cleansing. Alone, or naturally blended with other Quartz, it provides some of the finest healing tools available.
Within the realm of dark stones, Smokey Quartz offers a rare and beautiful transparency that draws light into shades of black and brown. With crystals as pale and surreal as a wisp of smoke, as dark and clear as midnight waters, or as warm and rich as a cognac by the fire, this mineral honors its connection with Mother Earth. It is a talisman of the Root Chakra, an anchor in the natural world, drawing white light energy from the Crown down through the body to be deeply rooted into the physical plane. It initiates movement of primal forces within the body and activates one’s survival instincts in a purified way. It brings strength and stability, and a sense of personal pride in walking the Earth and inhabiting a human form.
Smokey Quartz was known as a Stone of Power. To the ancient Druids, it was sacred and signified the potent dark power of Earth gods and goddesses. In other cultures it guided souls to the afterlife, served in shamanistic rituals and tribal ceremonies, and was utilized in magic and scrying to connect with spirits of the lower worlds. Smokey Quartz’s phenomenal power, then and now, lies in its ability to protect and ground one physically and spiritually to this world, and to absorb and transmute significant amounts of negative energy and release it into the Earth to be neutralized naturally. It provides a vital shield against psychic attack, emotional and environmental stress, and is used extensively in healing and meditation.
Specularite:-
Hematite’s name is derived from the Greek word haima, meaning blood. This stone is known for connecting the body to the Earth. Ancient Greeks associated Hematite with Mars, the god of war. Many warriors, including ancient Greeks, Romans, and Native Americans, used crushed Hematite on their bodies to create a red paint-like appearance thought to keep them safe in battle. Hematite was believed to make a warrior invulnerable and give them courage and strength. During the Patheolithic era, early humans created cave paintings using the red pigment from ground-up Hematite.
Hematite was also used for medicinal purposes in ancient times. In Mesopotamia, Hematite was used to cool the blood. Similarly, in ancient Egypt, Hematite was recommended for treating inflammation because of its iron oxide properties.
Hematite is a very special mineral that was believed to be used by man 164,000 years ago. A small area south of Mossel Bay in South Africa has been excavated numerous times since 2000 and produced numerous artifacts dating back hundreds of thousands of years ago. Interestingly, an observation from one of the excavations was that of writing on a cave wall in a red powder substance. Through extensive research and analysis it had been confirmed that this powder was in fact Hematite.
NASA made a remarkable discovery when they found Hematite on Mars. It was found by the infrared spectrometer on the NASA Mars Global Surveyor and 2001 Mars Odyssey spacecraft when it was orbiting the planet. What makes this even more interesting is the need of water for Hematite to occur. NASA Scientists are now studying the images and samples in which they took to help better understand the environment of Mars, and if it is suitable for life.
Hematite is one of the most powerful grounding stones in the mineral kingdom, intended to root your body and mind back to Earth. This stone helps refocus your thoughts and actions into those that matter to you most while guiding you on the right path. It's a stone of attraction, much like that of a magnet. Hematite is constantly pulling down excess energy from your environment to help you use it towards your best interests. Once your focus becomes anchored to the Earth, Hematite shows you that anything you desire is achievable.
Specular Hematite (also called Specularite) is a variety of Hematite with a shimmering, silvery surface and a black undertone that sometimes comes across as grey or navy blue. This stone includes traces of mica within its makeup and usually has a very distinct metallic lustre although it can occur in dull formations as well.
Specular Hematite carries the same general properties as Hematite but takes it further into the realm of spirit. This stone stimulates the root and crown, forming a strong link between them to raise the lower, grounded frequencies and to ground the higher, spiritual frequencies. Specular Hematite awakens one to their true spirit while here on Earth, encouraging those who work with it to be their true selves without fear of judgement. The vibrations of this stone take one beyond any norms or assumptions of what a true spiritual path is, allowing one to freely form their own path through unique self expression of spirit. This stone reminds us that we have all come into this life with our own gifts and talents, and encourages us to express them freely.
Specular Hematite is particularly helpful for identifying one’s own unique talents and how they can be used in any situation or endeavour. When carrying or wearing this stone, one may begin to notice their talents and visions shining outward whether going through day to day activities or working on specific projects - and others will notice this as well. This is very helpful for living each day in alignment with one’s true spirit and bringing your visions of this spirit into reality. Specular Hematite pushes us to do that which brings us true joy and to bring our manifestations to reality through this joy. It tells us to reach for the stars despite what other people (or even our own limiting thoughts) might think or say. Just looking into its glimmering, star-like patterns reminds one that the stars aren’t as far away as we may think.
