Spinel is a magnesium aluminum oxide mineral (MgAl₂O₄) that forms in the same geological conditions as corundum — the mineral family that produces ruby and sapphire. Spinel has hardness ranking of 8 on the Mohs scale, so top quality individual stones are stunning and durable gemstone suitable for jewellery. The color variations are due to trace elements such as chromium, iron, cobalt, and vanadium. This material is known as ‘massive’ as it does not coalesce into individual stones but forms larger masses with the host rock, which is generally metamorphic limestone (marble).

As this material forms together with Corundum and in the same host metamorphic limestone it will have a varied appearance. This material is also listed as Ruby in Matrix as Ruby is a type of Corundum and Rich sounds more appealing than Spinel to most people. Especially in areas like Myanmar there is very little discernible difference between the Rubies (Corundum) and Spinels that are found.
