This material is Pyrolusite and was collected from the from the Iron Wizard Open cut which is part of the Iron Baron Open cut mine, Middleback Ranges, South Australia, Australia. Due to the Matrix and the intense injection of the Pyrolusite this material tends to be in relatively small specimens as larger pieces fracture and break.

The Iron Baron mine is located at the northern end of the North Middleback Range, and is the southern extension of the Iron Prince deposit from which it is separated by a large mass of intrusive Dolerite.

Mainly a mineral of bog deposits and shallow marine, it delivers a high pH and is a mineral of rutile group. Also found in the oxidized zones of manganiferous ore deposits, it forms interesting fern-like dendritic patterns on stone surfaces. With both colloidal processes and bacterial activity in its formation its deposits are formed by circulating meteoric water.
