These rare specimens are known as ‘Sunshine’ Fluorite and come from a recently discovered Akwana Deposit, located in the Logo Local Government area of Benue State, Nigeria. Material from this location is frequently found with microcrystalline Pyrite, Quartz and Chalcopyrite ‘frost’ or ‘druse’ over the Fluorite. A side effect of the druse coating can hinder the colour change appearance without strong sunlight. The crystals often form in hydrothermal cavities, which allows for complex, interlocking cluster formations.
While most of the Benue Trough rift is famous for hosting massive Lead and Zinc veins (Galena and Sphalerite), the Akwana-Arufu region is unique. It is geologically classified as a Mississippi Valley-Type (MVT) "fluoritic subtype" deposit. This means that while base metals are present, the hydrothermal fluids were exceptionally rich in Fluorine, Calcium, and Siloca, resulting in massive, beautifully formed Fluorite pocket rooms.
As the main Fluorite crystals finished growing in their pocket space, a final post-sulfide phase cooled the fluids. This triggered a late-stage sprinkle of iron sulfides (Pyrite) and microcrystalline Quartz to deposit smoothly right onto the surface of the Fluorite cubes.
When exposed to sunlight, this material exhibits a natural photochromic effect changing colour, often from green to a deep indigo or blue. The colour change is a reversible reaction where the Fluorite changes colour when exposed to light and returns to its original colour when the light source is removed. This phenomenon is due to natural defects or trace rare earth elements in the crystal lattice, primarily Yttrium, Europium, or Cerium.
Under natural lighting, most of the crystals show a bicolour effect created by obvious colour zoning, with a green core highlighted by blue edges. All specimens show strong fluorescence when exposed to long-wave (365 nm) UV light, turning to violet-blue or an intense electric blue colour.
** be aware that it is not advised to display this material where it is constantly in bright sunlight as this will cause fading to happen **
Fluorite (also called fluorspar) is the mineral form of calcium fluoride, CaF2. It belongs to the Halide minerals. It crystallizes in isometric cubic habit, although octahedral and more complex isometric forms are not uncommon. Rainbow Fluorite exhibits a combination of colours inherent in Fluorite crystals, such as purple, blue, green, clear and yellow and, as such, it blends all of the properties of each colour.
Fluorite often occurs with other common minerals, including Quartz and Calcite which makes it an excellent healing tool for its overall cleansing and purifying effects. It typically contains green and purple colours, giving it an incredible synergistic energy that heals and rejuvenates the aura. The green cleanses and purifies the heart chakras by aligning your mind with the true desires of the heart. The perfect prescription for a case of existential burnout, the purple colours in the Fluorite crystal stone helps you discover your divine purpose in life. It opens and stimulates the third eye chakra, clearing the way for spiritual expansion.
Keep the creative juices flowing by meditating with the Fluorite crystal, a stone that gives order to chaos. Sit quietly with Fluorite and call on its gentle healing powers to help you coordinate your physical and mental abilities. As you inhale, imagine its white light of healing vibrations infusing your spirit with its energizing waves of clarity and rejuvenation. When you meditate with Fluorite, it reminds you to step away from the canvas to see the bigger picture. As you exhale, imagine your feelings of confusion and frustration evolving into a sense of peace that comes from its green shades, a colour that evokes the spirit of deep tropical seas.
Fluorite cleanses and stabilises the aura. It absorbs and neutralises negative energy and stress. An excellent learning aid, Fluorite increases our powers of concentration, self-confidence and helps us in decision-making. It encourages positivity, balances the energies, and improves balance and coordination, both physically and mentally.
