These pieces of awesome Botryoidal Yellow Calcite on grey Sphalerite from the Qinglong Mine, Dachang SB Ore Field, Qinglong County, Qianxinan, Guizhou, China. These particular specimens show two distinct generations and formation types of Calcite. The initial Calcite generation on the Sphalerite base is the Botryoidal formation which is mainly clear moving through to a medium yellow tone in some areas. These specimens display minimal UV reaction.

This piece weighs 154g and measures 7cm x 5cm x 4cm.

Calcite:-

While its name comes from the German word calcit (meaning limestone) and only came into use relatively recently, in the ancient world, Calcite was grouped together with gypsum and called “alabaster” for its fair, milky colour. During the Second World War, it was used for gun sights, due to its ready availability.

Calcite is clear, whitish, or pale grey, but can take on different shades of grey, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, brown, or even black. Sphalerite:-

Sphalerite is a Sulphide mineral with the formula ((which Zn, Fe)S).It is the principal ore of zinc. Pure sphalerite is colorless and rare. Normally, iron is present, causing the colour to vary from pale greenish yellow to brown and black with increasing iron content. When iron content is high it is an opaque black variety, marmatite. 

It is usually found in association with galena, pyrite, and other sulphides along with Calcite, Dolomite and Fluorite. Miners have also been known to refer to sphalerite as Zinc blende, black-jack and Ruby jack. Its complex crystals combine tetrahedral or dodecahedral forms with other faces.

Sphalerite gets its name from the Greek sphaleros, meaning “deceitful,” because its lustrous dark crystals can be mistaken for other minerals. It is often coarsely crystalline or massive, or forms banded, botryoidal, or stalactitic aggregates. It occurs in hydrothermal vein deposits contact metamorphic zones, and replacement deposits formed at high temperature (1,065°F/575°C or above). It is also found in meteorites and lunar rocks.
