152g Sardonyx Rough with Quartz Vug Specimen

This piece weighs 101g and measures 8cm x 4cm x 2.5cm and has two Quartz Vug’s, (pockets) that almost intersect. One is quite small but the other runs the entire length of the piece creating an awesome colour contrast with the pure black and red of this piece. All photos are not colour enhanced and have been taken with the stone completely dry for an accurate representation of the colours.

Sardonyx is a chalcedony that it coloured black, red, brown and white. This cryptocrystalline quartz can be coloured with iron and carbon inclusions giving it the brown and black colouring. It is formed hydrothermally in hollows or vugs in rocks.

Sardonyx is created in layers of the brown or red sard stone and the black, white or green onyx stone and is a birthstone for August. This gives it a beautiful banded appearance. The word Sardonyx is derived from the Greek, sard meaning “reddish brown,” and onyx meaning “veined gem.” The best stones are found in India, which is the source of these rough pieces.

In ancient Egypt the stones were used for protection against evil spirits and entities and they believed the stones to have very strong physic energies.  The Egyptians also believed that when in the vicinity of the stones crime was significantly reduced.  One of the old ancient techniques that the stone was used for, is to grid the home.  By placing the stones in all of the corners of your home the energies would build up thus creating a protective barrier bordering around your entire house.

Carnelian and Sard are both forms of Quartz, the only difference between them is their color. There is no clear definition from any gem lab on when one variety stops and the other starts, but we can try to define the difference. Carnelian is a mid toned, orange stone. The darker it gets, the browner it will begin to look and eventually it will be called Sard. The origin of the brown color comes from Iron impurities in the stone.
