Sphalerite is a Sulfide mineral with the formula ((which Zn, Fe)S).It is the principal ore of zinc. Pure sphalerite is colorless and rare. Normally, iron is present, causing the color to vary from pale greenish yellow to brown and black with increasing iron content. When iron content is high it is an opaque black variety, marmatite.

It is usually found in association with galena, pyrite, and other sulfides along with Calcite, Dolomite and Fluorite. Miners have also been known to refer to sphalerite as Zinc blende, black-jack and Ruby jack. Its complex crystals combine tetrahedral or dodecahedral forms with other faces.

Sphalerite gets its name from the Greek sphaleros, meaning “deceitful,” because its lustrous dark crystals can be mistaken for other minerals. It is often coarsely crystalline or massive, or forms banded, botryoidal, or stalactitic aggregates. It occurs in hydrothermal vein deposits contact metamorphic zones, and replacement deposits formed at high temperature (1,065°F/575°C or above). It is also found in meteorites and lunar rocks.

Add Purple Fluorite to the mix:

Originally known as Fluorspar or Fluorospar, Fluorite is primarily an industrial mineral with a low melting point deriving its name from the Latin fleure, meaning “to flow,” and refers to its use as a flux in the steel and aluminum smelting processes. It has numerous uses in the ceramic and chemical industries as a source of fluoride, fluorine, and hydrofluoric acid and for use in glazes, enamels, and specialty glass. High-quality Fluorite is also used in making top-grade optical lenses for cameras, microscopes, and telescopes. The term “Fluorspar” is still commonly used in the industrial and chemical trades, while “Fluorite” is used for mineralogical, lapidary, and most other references.

Fluorite is composed of calcium fluoride and is a member of the Halide family. It is transparent to translucent with a vitreous luster and crystallizes in well-formed isometric cubes, nodules, clusters, or massive forms. It is the only common mineral with perfect cleavage in four directions. This characteristic may be visible to the naked eye in clear stones as subtle etchings permeating the entire crystal.

This cleavage frequently produces perfect octahedrons and, more rarely, dodecahedrons and other complex forms, including penetration twins as if one cube were growing into or out of another. Fluorite is the reference mineral for a hardness of four on the Mohs Hardness Scale, making it too soft for everyday wear as a gem. However, it is carved into wonderful faceted stones and sold as collector’s specimens or used in jewellery that is not subject to impact or abrasion.

Hailed as “the most colourful mineral in the world,” Fluorite forms in a wide variety of hues, typically purple, green, yellow, blue, and pure form – colourless. However, specimens of pink, red, white, brown, and black also occur. It is frequently multi-colored with bands, or zones, of color that intermingles. Impurities, exposure to radiation, and voids in the color centers determine Fluorite’s color and help give it a wonderful luminous quality. Its crystals were some of the first specimens studied for the phenomenon of “fluorescence,” which was named after Fluorite, and are thought to be caused when trace amounts of yttrium, cerium, europium or other rare earth elements substitute for calcium in the mineral structure. Some varieties of Fluorite may also be phosphorescent, thermoluminescent, and/or triboluminescent.

Fluorite is an extraordinary creation of Nature, beautiful and luminous, soft and glassy, often vibrant in colour, with an internal structure of order and perfection that resonates with the human mind like no other crystal. It carries a calm, stable frequency that brings order to chaos, scatters, and discordant energies into cohesion and harmony. Fluorite supports spirituality and thought focus and concentration, and balance in all aspects of one’s life.

Known as the “Genius Stone,” Fluorite represents the highest state of mental achievement, boosting aptitude and discernment, absorbing new information, and helping one work through complex issues. Its energy stimulates the electrical charge of brain cells, drawing in more life force (prana) as it encourages both hemispheres to work harmoniously together in balance. Expanding consciousness advances the mind to greater mental, spiritual, and psychic awareness. It stirs creativity and provides a limitless range of avenues for exploration. Fluorite forms in many color varieties, and while each manifests its abilities in different ways, all serve the mental body, brain, and energetic levels of being.

It purifies the mind and enhances mental acuity, stimulating the Third Eye Chakra in order to bring a logical and conscious awareness of the mental processes and how one thinks. It is an excellent crystal for focused meditation and boosts one’s intuitive and psychic abilities. Purple Fluorite is a stone of protection, thought to become more protective the longer it is used, and is an ideal “Dream Crystal,” defending one from evil spirits and bad dreams. It radiates a marvelous energy throughout the light body relieving stress, spiritual discomfort, and physical blockages.

Fluorite has a wonderful, stabilizing effect on the emotional body, helping one to “think through” one’s feelings when overwhelmed and to allow a coherent pattern to emerge that dissolves confusion, vacillation, fear of the future, or of making a wrong decision.

It gently brings suppressed feelings to the surface for resolution and is beneficial in countering mental disorders. Fluorite helps dispel illusion and rigid thinking to reveal the truth and help one move beyond narrow-mindedness to the bigger picture. It increases self-confidence and structures one’s energy to unearth one’s true potential.

Fluorite is also an excellent crystal for helping one understand the balances intrinsic to relationships. It aids one in being impartial and unbiased and utilizing fair reasoning in situations where it would be wise to see and act on information with objectivity. Fluorite brings stability to groups, linking them to a common purpose, and allows relationships, groups, and the individual to flourish within that which is beneficial to all.

Last, but certainly not least are the perfectly formed miniature Clear Quartz clusters nestled in some of the voids. As Clear Quartz is best known as the “amplifier crystal” if you secure one of these pieces I am sure you will agree with how simply awesome they are.
