This piece of Siltstone is from the Fingal Tiers, Tasmania and weighs 128g and measures 7cm x 6cm x 2cm.

The patterns and colours in this stone are dependent on the minerals in the area where it was formed. As the silt from ancient rivers and lakes settle, the water enriched with various minerals, manganese and iron and various other minerals and sometimes even volcanic ash, flow and trickle down the fissures or fractures, and bedding planes between layers of silt, limestone and other rock types. Dendritic Siltstones are formed in the same way jaspers are, generally without the silica.

Siltstone is found in many locations throughout the world, domestic customers may be familiar with some material from Western Australia known as Zebra Stone, Primordial Stone, Okapi Stone or Astronomite, - this material is a type of Siltstone or Mudstone.
