This specimen of Azurite ‘suns’ on a Kaolinitic matrix is from the iconic location of the Malbunka Copper Mine, Areyonga, Gardiner Range, MacDonnell Region, Northern Territory, Australia. Azurite suns are a unique formation of this mineral, only found in a single mine: the Malbunka Copper Mine in Australia. These suns form between layers of a clay mineral called kaolinite resulting in a very strong colour contrast.

They are thought to have been formed by hydrothermal fluids carrying copper ions through bedding planes in the rock formation. Carbonate molecules and copper ions in the groundwater nucleated around mineral grains in the kaolinite, which caused the azurite to crystallize. Because the azurite was forced to grow in a laterally-compressed and radiating manner along preferred bedding planes, the azurite grew uniformly outward, often producing circular shapes.

Azurite is a copper based mineral with a deep blue colour note, produced by weathering of copper ore deposits. During the early 19th century, it was also known as chessylite, after the common location near Lyon, France. The mineral has been known since ancient times, and was mentioned in Pliny the Elder’s Natural History under the Greek name kuanos (κυανός: "deep blue," root of English cyan) and the Latin name caeruleum. Since antiquity, azurite's exceptionally deep and clear blue has been associated with low-humidity desert and winter skies. The modern English name of the mineral reflects this association, since both azurite and azure are derived via Arabic from the Persian lazhward (لاژورد), an area known for its deposits of another deep-blue stone, Lapis Lazuli ("stone of azure").

Azurite’s metaphysical properties still mirror its legacy powers, clearing away tension and confusion, and opening the mind to new perspectives. This crystal stimulates the intellect, awakening the development of psychic and intuitive abilities, and brings inner vision into alignment with spiritual guidance. It may be used for the enhancement of dreams, entering a meditative or channeling state, and enables out of body journeys to take place safely. Azurite is beneficial in exploring past or alternate lives, and its ability to clear the Throat Chakra allows for precise verbalization recalled from these experiences.

Azurite stimulates all the mind centres, nourishing a keen interest in life, one’s function in society, and discovering new commonalities and links within our world. It encourages the study of new and challenging subjects, not only for school or college students, but for adults trying to fit study in with other commitments, and for “students of life” over-fifty or in retirement. Azurite enhances focus and concentration, memorization and retention of information.

Azurite’s deep blue energy stimulates the Third Eye Chakra in awakening the psychic and intuitive self, and in opening the mind to spiritual guidance. It provides insight into all areas of our lives. It aligns the chakras and attunes the physical body to the ethereal, dissolving blockages throughout the system. The unimpaired flow of energy allows for increased communication and verbalization through the Throat Chakra.

The Brow Chakra also called the Third Eye, is the centre of our perception and command. It directs our sight and everyday awareness of the world. Our consciousness is located here, and we relate to ourselves through this chakra. When the Brow Chakra is in balance our thoughts and internal communications within ourselves are healthy and vibrant. We are open to new ideas, dreams, and visions, and can control the flow of energy within all the chakras. The dark blue/purple crystals of indigo are used to treat imbalances of the Brow Chakra. It is a quiet colour, one of mystery and wisdom and judgment.

The Throat Chakra is the voice of the body and is, in essence, a pressure valve that allows energy from the other chakras to be expressed. If it is blocked, or out of balance, it can affect the health of the other chakras. When the Throat Chakra is in balance and open, it allows for the expression of what we think and what we feel. We can communicate our ideas, beliefs, and emotions, bringing our personal truth out into the world. We have an easy flow of energy within the body and spirit. The energy that springs upward from the lower chakras can continue its path enabling free expression and natural release. Blue crystal energy unblocks and balances the Throat Chakra. Darker shades of blue encourage the power of truth, while lighter shades carry the power of flexibility, relaxation, and balance.
