This particular Native Copper Specimen is from Conductor 1, 204 block, stockpile 9 of the DeGrussa Copper Mine, Dulgunna Station, Peak Hill Mining District, Meekatharra Shire, Western Australia, Australia.

DeGrussa is famous for producing highly aesthetic, bright crystalline "Christmas tree" formations and heavy, pure native copper branching sheets. Native copper only formed within a narrow, 80-metre-thick oxidized weathering profile just above the water table.

Because the mine was an underground operation that focused heavily on extracting massive deep sulfides, the upper oxidised materials containing native copper were only accessible during specific phases of development

Now that mining has completely stopped and the locality is closed, no new material will ever be pulled from the ground, ensuring that DeGrussa native copper remains a finite to what is currently available from existing collections.

The main DeGrussa deposit represents a 20 m-thick, steeply dipping to almost vertical body of high grade copper-gold mineralisation with lesser zinc and silver that lies structurally above Conductor 1.

The DeGrussa Copper deposit in central WA occurs in a sequence of volcanic rocks that erupted on the sea floor about 2 billion years ago. The ‘primary’ minerals at DeGrussa were Copper, Iron and Zinc-rich sulfide minerals such as Chalcopyrite , Pyrite, Pyrrhotite and Sphalerite that formed at high temperatures on or below the sea floor.

Many millions of years after it formed, this ‘ore’ was exposed at the Earth’s surface where the ‘primary’ sulfides were transformed by the action of groundwaters and our oxygen-rich atmosphere to produce a colourful blanket of ‘secondary’ minerals like Malachite, Azurite, Chrysocolla, Cuprite and Copper.

DeGrussa is located 900km north-east of Perth in Western Australia and, prior to its decommissioning, in October 2022, included the high-grade DeGrussa and Monty Copper-Gold Mines.

The name copper comes from the Greek kyprios, or Cyprus, the location of copper mines since pre-historic times. Native copper was an important ore of copper in historic times and was used by pre-historic peoples. Native copper is still found in limited quantities in once-active mining regions. These finds are now valuable as mineralogical specimens and ornamental pieces.

Native copper is one of the few metallic elements to occur as a natural mineral in an uncombined form. It more commonly occurs in oxidized states often mixed with other elements. Native copper can occur as cubic and octahedral crystals, but more typically is found as irregular masses and fracture fillings. It has a reddish, orange to brownish colour on fresh surfaces, but often is heavily weathered and coated with secondary copper minerals and carbonates.
