This simply awesome piece is Bladed Siderite on Quartz with Dolomite from the Kaiwu Mine, Hezhang Co, Bijie, Guizhou, China. The “Kaiwu Mine” specific location has been disputed as no such mine is documented but the location is from Hezhang Co. I have been advised by my trusted supplier that they are probably from the Caiyuanzi FE (Iron) deposit, as he had some very similar pieces a couple of years ago. I have also been informed that the exact location is seldom divulged, especially in small local finds to protect them. Word quickly spreads and claims are not respected - it is a little like the “Wild West” during the Gold Rushes in the United States. This whole area of Hezhang is very rich in Iron related mines as has been mined for over a century.

Siderite:-

Siderite is a mineral that has many growth habits and can quite often be confused or incorrectly labelled as a different material. The colour of siderite varies from yellow, brown, red, green, and grey. It belongs to the calcite group and is a form of carbonate. On the Mohs scale of hardness, siderite is at 3.5 to 4.5.

Siderite has iron content and is often used to extract it. Its use for iron ore started in the early 1800s. It is also used to create brown paint pigments and also for creating steel. Scientists have also developed synthetic siderite to remove arsenic and fluoride from water, creating lithium batteries and for the study of agriculture management.

Named in 1791 by Nicolas Théodore de Saussure in honour of the French mineralogist and geologist, Déodat (Dieudonné) Guy Sylvain Tancrède Gratet de Dolomieu. He discovered a specimen of what would eventually be called dolomite during his participation in Napoleon Bonaparte's expedition into Egypt in 1798.

Dolomite is usually found as druzes or clusters of small rhombohedral crystals with a somewhat "saddle"-like shape, white to tan to pink in colour or in massive outcrops of low grade material. Dolomite, also known as dolomitic limestone, magnesian limestone, or dolostone, is a sedimentary rock composed of Calcium and Magnesium Carbonate It forms through the process of dolomitization, where Calcium Carbonate, or Limestone undergoes partial or full transformation.

Dolomite rock is quarried, crushed, and ground into various fractions for diverse applications. It is widely used in agriculture to improve soil quality, in refractories due to its magnesium content, and in the paint and plastics industries as a filler material.
