Named by Abraham Gottlob Werner in 1817 after John Henry Vivian (August 9, 1785 - February 10, 1855), an English (Welsh-Cornish) politician, mine owner, and mineralogist living in Truro, Cornwall and discoverer of the mineral. Vivianite is a bluish mineral sometimes encountered in archaeological deposits. It is notable for its tendency to change colour from white or greyish to blue on exposure to air. Vivianite requires specific conditions for its formation-sources of iron, phosphate, and water, as well as low levels of oxygen and sulphide. Microbial activity is also thought to play a part in Vivianite formation.

These Vivianite nodules from Anglesea Victoria can be up to 200mm across and have been found washed ashore from submarine outcrops of black carbonaceous and pyritic Anglesea Sand Beds. The Vivianite nodules from Demons Bluff occur in 2 forms- crystalline and non-crystalline. The crystalline nodules when opened are generally dark blue and have a crystalline structure radiating towards the centre. Some of these nodules have cavities towards the centre which are lined with dark blue green stubby crystals of Vivianite usually no more than 3mm across. The non-crystalline nodules (which are the most common form at Demons Bluff) are massive and compact and when first exposed to light can be very pale green-white. In time they turn darker blue/green. Many sources of information advise keeping away from strong light, however polished specimens (which best display the patchy/mottled structure of the nodule) such as these tend to hold the original colour.
