Pink Coin Calcite, also known as Sandwich Calcite is a trade name for hexagonal, flat calcite crystals from Fujian Province, China. This material is characterised by the coin-like shape and layered banding, specific to this location. These crystals get their soft pink color from manganese or iron and exhibit a very bright red/pink fluorescence under UV light.

This stunning statement piece weighs 1,433g and measures 15cm x 9cm x 7cm. This specimen has been base cut on both the horizontal and vertical axis to enable two angles to appreciate the amazing colour and formation of this piece. My favourite feature of this unique piece is the multitude of small crystals growing in the many fissures of the Sphalerite coated matrix. Overall a wonderful display piece worthy of any collection.

While its name comes from the German word calcit (meaning limestone) and only came into use relatively recently, in the ancient world, Calcite was grouped together with gypsum and called “alabaster” for its fair, milky colour.
