Mookaite:-

The term 'Mookaite' is an unofficial, locally coined name for a silicified Porcelainite which forms in the weathering profile of a geological formation known as Windalia Radiolarite (WR), a Lower Cretaceous sedimentary unit that outcrops over much of the Carnarvon Basin in Western Australia. Mookaite formed when silicon rich solutions seeped through a deep-water Chert deposit that contained radiolites.

Although most Mookaite contains only the chemical remains of the radiolaria, occasionally impressions of Ammonites and other organisms have been preserved. There are also rare occurrences of black dendrite inclusions in Mookaite that, when cut en cabochon, produces a dendrite “tree” formation and greatly increases the value.

Mookaite is variously, and incorrectly, described as Chert, Opalite or Chalcedony, or combinations of the three. From a strictly geological perspective however, Mookaite is best defined as a silicified type of Radiolarite whose silification is Opaline to Chalcedonic. However it is easy to see from the way in which this material was formed that the classification is widely debated. I am happy with including this material as a Jasper, which is a very broad spectrum of material.

Mookaite Jasper is found only in the Kennedy Ranges of Western Australia in outcroppings near Mooka Creek, the area for which it is named. The Aboriginal term “Mooka” means “running waters” and refers to the numerous springs that feed into this area. Mookaite was formed as the skeletal remains of radiolaria, microscopic protozoa with a hard silica shell, were deposited over millennia as sediment in shallow areas of sea beds. As waters receded, the remains were solidified by additional silica carried in groundwater, along with minerals that produced its beautiful combinations of red, burgundy, mustard-yellow, cream, white, brown, mauve and purple.

Mookaite is an Australian Jasper of bold, earthy beauty with a fiery fusion of red and yellow energies. It carries an invigorating frequency of strength and vitality, and increases Life Force within the physical body. An Aboriginal Mother Earth stone, it is gaining in popularity throughout the world for its healing capacity, and for empowering one to feel and connect with the electromagnetic energy currents of the Earth. It enables one to utilise these positive energies to increase one’s will and focus one’s personal power. Mookaite promotes an ageless spirit willing to accept change and seek new experiences, and awakens one’s natural instincts in knowing the right direction to take.

Use Mookaite Jasper to connect with elemental Earth powers for increasing self-confidence, self-worth, and to realise one’s full potential. Mookaite emanates the energy of animal knowing, or instinct, and may be used to amplify one’s own instincts when making decisions, especially when there are conflicting factors to consider.

Mookaite is a nurturing stone that supports and sustains during times of stress. It brings peace and a feeling of wholeness. It encourages versatility and helps us to accept change.  Mookaite provides us with emotional growth.  It helps us to discover all possibilities in a situation and to choose the right one.  Mookaite provides a protective shield against negative or dangerous situations, eliminating and blocking unwanted outside influences and distractions, and revealing what is concealed.  Mookaite promotes energy and new ideas, helping us gain enthusiasm and bringing the excellence of ourselves, bring kindness to ourselves and others.  Mookaite helps with contacting those who have passed on.

In general, Jasper is known as the “supreme nurturer”. It sustains and supports during times of stress, and brings tranquility and wholeness. Used in healing, Jasper unifies all aspects of your life. Jasper reminds people to help each other.

The word Jasper comes from “iaspi” a Greek word that means “spotted stone”. Jasper is an opaque rock of virtually any colour stemming from the mineral content of the original sediments or ash. Patterns arise during the consolidation process forming flow and depositional patterns in the original silica rich sediment or volcanic ash, Hydrothermal action is generally thought to be required in the formation of jasper.

Jasper can be modified by the diffusion of minerals along discontinuities providing the appearance of vegetative growth, i.e., dendritic. The original materials are often fractured and/or distorted, after deposition, into diverse patterns, which are later filled in with other colourful minerals. Weathering, with time, will create intensely coloured superficial rinds.

The classification and naming of jasper varieties presents a challenge. Terms attributed to various well-defined materials includes the geographic locality where it is found, sometimes quite restricted such as "Bruneau" (a canyon) and "Lahontan" (a lake), rivers and even individual mountains; many are fanciful, such as "forest fire" or "rainbow", while others are descriptive, such as "autumn" or "porcelain". A few are designated by the place of origin such as a brown Egyptian or red African.

Jasper is often associated with the season of autumn, with grounding and being connected to the energies of the earth. Many people who love Jasper say that it anchors them in the present moment and helps with any tendencies towards over-thinking and worrying about the future. The energy of Jasper is slow, relaxed, and very grounded, bringing comfort and a sense that all is right with your world.

Jasper encourages gratitude, something that is widely held to be extremely beneficial to our mental health. Many of us struggle with the concept of gratitude when we are feeling overwhelmed or badly treated. Jasper can help us to find the little things we need to be grateful for.

Jasper is a good stone to have near you if you feel that things are becoming overwhelming, or that you are close to burning out.Jasper is a balancing stone and can help you to put down any burdens you may be shouldering that are not yours to carry. It helps clear the mind and is a powerful protector against negative feelings, moods, and vibrations.

Thumb/Worry Stones:-

Thumb Stones/Worry Stones are smooth, polished gemstones, usually in the shape of an oval with a thumb-sized indentation, used for relaxation or anxiety relief. They are used by holding the stone between the index finger and thumb and gently moving one's thumb back and forth across the stone. This action of moving one's thumb back and forth across the stone can reduce stress. Other names that worry stones may be called are: thumb stones, fidget stones, soothing stones, or sensory stones.

As a folk practise implement, worry stones have many origins. Variations on the concept originate in Ancient Greece, Ireland, Tibet and multiple Native American Tribes. The concept of a worry stone began by the simple action of picking a smooth stone and fiddling with the stone. Native American tribes would continuously give them to younger generations, creating a sense of connection from previous family members. They also believed these worry stones were considered a sacred item and they were extra special if they were made out of quartz.

From the perspective of cognitive behaviour therapy the use of worry stones is one of many folk practises that can function as psychologically healthy self-soothing exercises. Such techniques are imparted at an early stage of treatment, displacing any familiar but destructive coping methods (nail-biting, scratching, lip-biting, etc.) that the patient may have developed. Worry stones are simple and intuitive enough to be useful in therapeutic contexts where complexity and unfamiliarity are paramount concerns, such as when offering short-term treatment to refugees or people with post-traumatic stress conditions.

After a patient has mastered a more sophisticated relaxation script for anxiety management, the worry stone itself can serve as a physical 'relaxation script reminder' - the patient may notice an impulse to use the object, and thereby become aware of their own anxiety. The rubbing of the stone can create a sense of relaxation making the mind more relaxed and generating a sense of calmness. There are also people that may use them during meditation practises, this is known to centre a personepids concentration benefiting the meditation.
