This specimen of Bladed Calcite with Clear Quartz and Magnetite weighs 80g and measures approximately 5cm x 4cm x 3cm and was sourced from the Kara Mine, Tasmania.

Kara Mine:-

An operating open-cut mine, located 40 km south of Burnie in northwestern Tasmania, producing Magnetite and minor Scheelite. It is the only presently operating mine in a series of related skarn deposits associated with Devonian Granites intruding Ordovician limestones.

The pit contains a zoned Magnetite, Andradite-hedenbergite, Vesuvianite, Epidote skarn, which contains minor Scheelite, Molybdenite and Calcite veins with various Cu, Pb, As, Zn, Bi sulphides, Fluorite and some Be minerals. Famous for excellent Andradite specimens, but personal collecting for any material at the mine is no longer permitted by the mine owners.

The deposit is world-renowned among geologists and mineralogists as a prime example of a zoned skarn deposit. It was formed during the Devonian period where the intrusive Housetop Granite made contact with older Ordovician Gordon Group limestone beds.

This intense chemical environment cooked the surrounding rock into highly mineralised skarn zones, making it a legendary source for collector-grade specimens of many minerals.

Calcite:-

Calcite is clear, whitish, or pale grey, but can take on different shades of grey, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, brown, or even black. This is due to microscopic quantities of other minerals or metals contained within the crystal matrix which makes the energy shift and it takes on unique characteristics.

Calcite is a family of calcium carbonates that occurs in a wide range of colours and formations. Most commonly it occurs in opaque masses but it can occur in a wide array of crystalline habits. Calcite is a soft mineral, with a Mohs hardness of 3. Because of its relative softness it is often carved or polished. Rough pieces are usually given an acid bath which softens the rough edges and give the stones a silky sheen.

Calcite has an amazing energy that refreshes and revitalizes, yet is still gentle. They help to remove blockages and break up old patterns. The wide range of colours ensures there is a calcite for every chakra. These strong yet gentle healers are easy to work with no matter your age, and even vibrate well with our feathered and furry friends. Magnetite:-

Magnetite is very easy to identify, and not to be confused with Magnesite as the names are very similar but the materials are very different. Magnetite is one of just a few minerals that are attracted to a common magnet. However, this natural magnetism varies dramatically in strength with some specimens only show slight magnetism. It is a black, opaque, submetallic to metallic mineral with a Mohs Hardness of between 5 and 6.5. It is often found in the form of isometric crystals. It is the most strongly magnetic mineral found in nature. It is one of the most abundant metal oxides, and its crystal structure contains both the ferrous (Fe+2) and ferric (Fe+3) forms of iron ions. Magnetite is an important ore and holds many industrial applications.

Magnetite crystals usually only occur when magma cools slowly enough for crystals to form and settle out of the magma. These crystals are typically octahedrons to dodecahedrons (eight-sided to twelve-sided shapes) that may exhibit fine lines (known as ‘striations’) on some surfaces. More often, magnetite occurs in its massive form, commonly called ‘lodestone’. This massive variety has a much more pronounced magnetic character, and large deposits of massive magnetite can play havoc with compasses. Lodestone’s magnetic attraction, however, is never strong enough to pull nails from ships as early sailing tales claimed!

Magnetite is believed to alleviate negative emotions such as fear, anger and grief while promoting positive qualities such as tenacity and endurance. Because magnetite has magnetic properties, it acts as a grounding stone and is thought to have powerful positive-negative polarity, meaning it attracts and repels, providing energy and a calming effect. Magnetite attracts love, commitment and loyalty. Magnetite is said to provide stability, balancing the intellect with the emotion as well as bringing a balanced perspective and trust in your own intuition. Magnetite is a base chakra stone, temporarily aligning the chakras and the subtle and etheric bodies.
