This specimen of Baryte on Goethite with small Clear Quartz weighs 78g and measures 4.5cm x 3.5cm x 3cm. It was sourced from the "Dunbar Baryte Deposit , formerly known as "Linke's Lode", which was located ~15 km southwest of the Oraparinna Baryte Mine. A significant Baryte deposit was found within a geological formation called the Adelaidean sediments. Production up to 2006 when the mine was closed was estimated at 530,000 tonnes of industrial and drilling grade Baryte.

Named in 1800 by Dietrich Ludwig Gustav Karsten from the Greek βαρύς, (Barys), meaning heavy. This name is in response to barite's high specific gravity of 4.5, which is exceptional for a nonmetallic mineral. Whilst Baryte is not a particularly rare mineral, top quality tabular crystals like these most definitely are with the crystals growing parallel to one another, or nearly so. Baryte is a mineral composed of barium sulphate (BaSO4). The high specific gravity of barite makes it suitable for a wide range of industrial, medical, and manufacturing uses.

Baryte is the primary ore of Barium, which is used to make a wide variety of Barium compounds. Some of these are used for x-ray shielding, as Barite has the ability to block x-ray and gamma-ray emissions. Barite compounds are also used in diagnostic medical tests. Baryte is used to make high-density concrete to block x-ray emissions in hospitals, power plants, and laboratories and is also used in the oil and gas industry with relation to drilling.

Goethite:-

Goethite, correctly pronounced ger-tite, is a naturally occurring iron oxide mineral that takes on various forms and colours. It forms through the oxidation of Iron in the presence of water and oxygen and can be found all over the world and is abundant on Mars.

Named in 1806 by Johann Georg Lenz in honour of the German poet, novelist, playwrighter, philosopher, politician, and geoscientist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe [August 28, 1749, Frankfurt, Germany – March 22, 1832, Weimar, Germany].

Goethite is an Iron hydroxide mineral that crystallizes in the form of masses, botryoidal, stalactites, and rarely, small prismatic crystals. The colour of Goethite ranges from black, brown and silver, to lighter colours such as red, yellowish brown, and orange.
