This material from Madagascar is known in the trade as Black Moonstone, which is actually a form of Labradorite and is a Feldspar mineral mainly found in Madagascar, the home of many of my personal favourite crystals.

This Palmstone weighs 76g and measures 6cm x 4cm x 2cm.

Many cultures believed varieties of Moonstone to be a protective talisman for travelers. The Romans for example believed that Moonstone were solidified pieces of moonbeams that had fallen to Earth. In India, still the source of the best Rainbow Moonstone in the world, they believed that Moonstone was a sacred stone of love.

These crystals are unusual, because although they look like they are colored black at first glance, when they are moved they have a lovely silver grey sheen. Black Moonstone may not as well known as Rainbow Moonstone but since they were discovered in Madagascar they are becoming rapidly more popular and recognised for their individual properties.
