Chrysoprase is a form of silica, much like sand or quartz, but it is made distinctive by the deposits of nickel in the stone that give it a distinctive green colour. The crystals in chrysoprase are so fine that they cannot be seen under a magnifying glass – much finer than the crystals that colour amethyst or rose quartz.
The name literally means “golden leek” in Greek, because this stone looks so bright that it might have come from nature. The Ancient Greeks said that chrysoprase was the sacred stone of Aphrodite, whose sacred colour was green.
A rare cool and calming variety of Chalcedony, this gemstone was a favourite of Alexander the Great, who called on its healing powers during his quest for world domination. In the days of old, the only source of this rare form of quartz was a region in southwestern Poland known as Lower Silesia. In fact, dating as far back as the Iron Age, Chrysoprase was a common feature in Silesian carving and masonry. The tradition of incorporating Chrysoprase into decorative art continued in the 18th century with Frederick II, King of Prussia. After he conquered the region he used the land deposits of green Chrysoprase to decorate the halls of his favourite palace at Potsdam near Berlin.
Chrysoprase is found all over the world, deposits in Brazil, South Africa, North America, Australia, and Central Europe. However Australian Chrysoprase, also sometimes known as Australian Jade is considered the highest quality in the world.
