This very interesting mixed specimen from the Huize Lead-Zinc mine in Yunnan, China. The specimen weighs 696g and measures 14cm x 9cm x 4.5cm and is a very complicated piece.

The base Matrix is mainly composed of Galena and Marmatite with a small amount of Chalcopyrite. On top of this wonderful flower like formations of Quartz have grown along with several large “Dog Tooth” Calcite crystals.

Clear Quartz:-

Clear Quartz is the "Stone of Power" and can help to amplify any energy or intention. Clear Quartz is also called the "Master Healer" and with the presence of the inclusions, this Quartz has wonderful healing abilities.

Quartz is a silicon dioxide mineral with a hardness of 7. Its crystal system is hexagonal which grows in a large variety of formations. It is one of the most abundant minerals, found on every continent of the Earth. Crystal Quartz exhibits the property of piezoelectricity, by which it can transform mechanical energy (eg pressure) into electromagnetic energy and vice versa.

Clear Quartz encourages clarity of thought and purpose to one’s heart and mind. It works on all levels of the energetic and physical bodies and resonates with all chakras. Calcite:-

While its name comes from the German word calcit (meaning limestone) and only came into use relatively recently, in the ancient world, Calcite was grouped together with gypsum and called “alabaster” for its fair, milky colour. During the Second World War, it was used for gun sights, due to its ready availability.

Calcite is clear, whitish, or pale grey, but can take on different shades of grey, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, brown, or even black. This is due to microscopic quantities of other minerals or metals contained within the crystal matrix which makes the energy shift and it takes on unique characteristics.

Calcite has an amazing energy that refreshes and revitalizes, yet is still gentle. They help to remove blockages and break up old patterns. Marmaris:

Marmatite, (also known as Christophite), which is an opaque Iron-rich variety of Sphalerite. The colour varies depending on the Iron content, in this case the colour is a golden honey colour. Marmatite is named from the German word marmatit, from the occurrence at the Marmato Mining District, Mun. de Salamina, Caldas Department, Colombia.

Sphalerite is a Zinc Iron sulphide mineral and a major ore of Zinc. Sphalerite is also known as Blende or Zinc Blende. When pure (with little or no iron) it forms clear crystals, usually red known as Ruby Blende, but as iron content increases it forms dark, opaque metallic crystals known as Marmatite.

Thess specimens are from Huxingshan Au-Pb-Zn Mine, Dongxiang District (Dongxiang has been uplated to be a district now), Fuzhou Prefecture, Jiangxi Province, China. The variety of combinations and quality of formations from this location is legendary. Specimens contain combinations of clear Quartz sometimes with Red Hematite inclusions, pure white Dolomite crystals, Pyrite, Chalcopyrite, Galena all on a solid base of Sphalerite var Marmite which are large translucent gold crystals, many are etched with “record keepers”.

Whilst it is not usual to find Sphalerite in association with Galena, Pyrite, and other sulphides along with Calcite, Dolomite and Fluorite, it is very unusual to find them all together with gem grade material (var Marmatite). Miners have also been known to refer to sphalerite as Zinc blende, black-jack and Ruby jack. Its complex crystals combine tetrahedral or dodecahedral forms with other faces.

Specimens of this material generally are in high demand and do not last long as many go into private collections. The specimens that are very popular among local collectors due to their outstanding presence are mainly on a very translucent golden Sphalerite var. Marmatite as base. The surface is Sphalerite with a low Fe content, fluorescence bright orangish yellow under LW(365 nm), also has great phosphorescence, with white Dolomite, gold Pyrite, silver Galena and colourless Quartz. Sometimes there will be some dark yellow Chalcopyrite with well-formed tetragonal tetrahedron. Another famous type is mainly based on Quartz with Hematite inclusion, Chalcopyrite crystals and some covered by Sphalerite are common combination, also Pyrite xls, Dolomite and Galena. This mine is still working, but producing almost no new specimens.

As the main focus of these specimens is the Marmatite, (Sphalerite) I will focus my description on that.

Sphalerite gets its name from the Greek sphaleros, meaning “deceitful,” because its lustrous dark crystals can be mistaken for other minerals. It is often coarsely crystalline or massive, or forms banded, botryoidal, or stalactitic aggregates. It occurs in hydrothermal vein deposits contact metamorphic zones, and replacement deposits formed at high temperature (1,065°F/575°C or above). It is also found in meteorites and lunar rocks.

Chalcopyrite:-

Chalcopyrite was the mineral upon which Bronze Age civilizations were built. Within the last century, it also became the mineral foundation for our modern electrical age. Our primary source of copper, chalcopyrite’s name comes from the Greek words ‘chalkos’ and ‘pyrites’, which respectively mean ‘copper’ and ‘striking fire’. With its metallic lustre and bright golden colour, chalcopyrite can fool people into thinking it is gold. It is one of two minerals, the other being pyrite, that are commonly known as ‘fool’s gold’.

Chalcopyrite is a striking, bright yellow, metallic mineral that occurs in nearly all sulphide deposits. Initially, it may be easy to confuse chalcopyrite with pyrite, but the two can be distinguished by their relative hardness and chalcopyrite’s iridescent tarnish. Pyrite is the harder of the two and cannot be easily scratched by a nail, unlike chalcopyrite. In its massive variety, chalcopyrite is one of the minerals most often mistaken for gold. While gold is ductile and malleable, chalcopyrite is brittle and will shatter if struck.

When Chalcopyrite is exposed to acid, its colour palette changes to deep purple, blues, violets, and yellows. This treated Chalcopyrite is what you will find at most shows and crystal shops, and is commonly referred to as “Peacock Ore”. Technically “ Peacock Ore” is another mineral called Bornite, which naturally tarnishes to these colours, but it quite rare.

Chalcopyrite is one of the strongest healing stones in the mineral kingdom and is known as the chakra stone. As the chakra stone, it will cleanse, balance and align all your chakra energy centres individually.
