I have selected this small to medium sized Atlantisite Palmstones in order to keep the prices down for this expensive material making them affordable to suit any budget. 

This piece weighs 46g and measures 6cm x 3.5cm  x 2cm.

The West Coast of Tasmania, was busy mining Silver and Lead in the 1890s. In the year 1910 the crystal Stichtite was discovered and was named after Robert Carl Sticht, the manager of the nearby mine (owned by Mount Lyell Mining & Railway company). Sadly, by 1930 the town was almost deserted. Atlantisite was thought to occur only at Stichtite Hill a small hilltop in Zeehan, Tasmania, where it is exclusively mined until Atlantisite type 2 was discovered at nearby Nevada Creek. This new material is Serpentine containing Stichtite, Chromite, Magnetite and White Aragonite.

Deposits have also been found in South Africa, but in general they lack the vibrant colours of the Tasmanian material.

Atlantisite is the name given to a combination stone comprising of Serpentine (a magnesium silicate mineral) and Stichtite (a hydrated magnesium chromium carbonate), with small amounts of Chromite and Magnetite. The overall mottled colour combination varies with the colour of the Serpentine ranging from pale lime green to a deeper dark green/black, and the Stichtite from pale pink/mauve to a deeper, rich mauve/purple. 

Serpentine is composed of magnesium iron silicate hydroxide that belongs to the Kaolinite-Serpentine group of crystals. Serpentine crystals have their origins in metamorphic alterations of peridotite and pyroxene. Serpentines may also pseudomorphously replace other magnesium silicates. These alterations may be incomplete, causing physical properties of serpentines to vary widely. 

Stichtite is composed of  hydrated magnesium chromium carbonate hydroxide. Stichtite is a rare and unusual carbonate. It forms in mostly compact masses or micaceous aggregates and is in stark contrast to the majority of carbonates that form well shaped, large and abundant crystals. It is formed as an alteration product of chromite containing serpentine.
