These particular Agates vary greatly in the strength of their UV reaction. Agates of this type are found in quite a few locations throughout the world and these are from an undisclosed location in Brazil. This material is not what is commonly known as “Volcano Agate” and are found in traditional Agate Geode form.
Generally, Agates are named after the place they were first discovered. Found in the ancient Achates River in Sicily (now the river is known as Dirillo or Acate). Theophrastus in 315BC mentioned in his treatise “On Stones” that the gemstone Agate derived its name from the Sicilian River. Research shows that Agate was used in Babylon as an amulet and ornamentation material. Its use has also been seen in Greek and Egyptian civilization. There is also evidences that Agate has been in use in India since ancient times. While the original form of Agate was found in Sicily, today varieties of the stone can be found in almost every corner of the world.
