This stone has been called "Chinese Painting Stone," or "Chinese Picture Jasper," and many other names but it is technically a type of dendritic siltstone found in the Liuzhou Prefecture, Guangxi Zhuang, China. These particular spheres are stunning with a slight green tinge and a plethora of Dendrites. They also contain more Jasper or Chalcedony than usual which is evidenced by their specific gravity and high gloss polish.

This piece weighs 436g and has a diameter of approximately 6cm. 

The patterns and colours in this stone are dependent on the minerals in the area where it was formed. As the silt from ancient rivers and lakes settle, the water enriched with various minerals, manganese and iron and various other minerals and sometimes even volcanic ash, flow and trickle down the fissures or fractures, and bedding planes between layers of silt, limestone and other rock types. Dendritic Siltstones are formed in the same way jaspers are, generally without the silica.

Siltstone is found in many locations throughout the world, domestic customers may be familiar with some material from Western Australia known as Zebra Stone, Primordial Stone, Okapi Stone or Astronomite, - this material is a type of Siltstone or Mudstone.

The natural patterns are embedded permanently by heat and pressure and harden into rock over millions of years into what is actually petrified mud or siltstone. The formations making the pictures and patterns is referred to as dendrite (from Greek déndron, tree). Because of the treelike features, these dendritic mineral patterns are sometimes so amazing that they have often been mistaken for fossil plants. The colours and patters are completely natural. They have not been painted or etched. They have been sliced, shaped and polished. Many say they resemble Chinese paintings, however I believe it is the reverse, Chinese paintings imitate the beauty found in these stones.
