I have managed to secure two absolutely stunning quality carvings of Buddha sculpted from “Volcano Agate” which in itself is stunning material, especially with the intense green UV reaction. This piece weighs 358g and measures 9cm x 5cm.
The material is marketed as “Volcano Agate” - cool sounding name, but it is a bit of a misleading trade name for this interesting and beautiful material. Now a large amount of Agate is formed in volcanic rock, and is s a product of the extrusives from volcanoes. Lava, tuff, scoria, but they have to cool and be subject to the hydrothermal processes before agate is deposited. I guess to call it "extrusive agate" is just not as catchy as "Volcano Agate”, but if you envisioned this material shooting out of a volcano with this awesome UV reaction…..sorry to burst your bubble….. not how it happened.
This particular material has very strong UV reaction of a green colour and
is UV reactive because it contains uranyl ions that are bound to the silica surface. The uranyl ions cause a green photoluminescence when exposed to UV light even at low concentrations.
Generally Agates are named after the place they were first discovered. Found in the ancient Achates River in Sicily (now the river is known as Dirillo or Acate). Theophrastus in 315BC mentioned in his treatise “On Stones” that the gemstone Agate derived its name from the Sicilian River. Research shows that Agate was used in Babylon as an amulet and ornamentation material. Its use has also been seen in Greek and Egyptian civilization. There is also evidences that Agate has been in use in India since ancient times. While the original form of Agate was found in Sicily, today varieties of the stone can be found in almost every corner of the world.
Agate is one of the commonly found gemstones in the world. There are numerous varieties of stone making it is truly versatile and effervescent stone. Agate is banded chalcedony belonging to the crypto-crystalline quartz family. Agate is more like an umbrella term used to describe the many varieties of stones that have similar but also distinctive compositions and properties. Varieties of agate are usually distinguished by their color or pattern and also by their place of origin. Agate is usually found in every color known to mankind and even in a colorless form. Plume agate is a variety of agate that is distinguished by its color. It is a red-brown and white-colored banded stone that has patterns naturally inscribed within its translucent body.
Agate is one of those gemstones that have a low intensity which metaphysically means that it vibrates lesser than other stones. Even then it is highly valued for its stabilizing effect and strengthening capabilities. The bands that invariably appear in all types of Agate may seem delicate but in reality, they all represent strength. Agate is known to help balance emotions, energize the intellectual capability of a person, improve a person’s physical stamina and balance the positive and negative forces of nature.
Agate can help those who have repressed emotional issues that need to be addressed so that they can let go (release) and heal. Many feel that Agate has an anti-depressant quality. It can be helpful for those who are struggling to be genuine in their lifestyle, as it promotes an understanding of the need for deeper meaning. Agate stimulates the exploration of the unknown and furthers ones quest toward the enlightened state.
Carry Agate to promote creative ability in any project or goal. Agate promotes creativity, and encourages one to find solutions rather than focusing on negative aspects of daily challenges. Crystal healers like to use Agate for its soothing and calming qualities. Agate energizes the auric body and encourages eternal and constant love by bringing in the energies of Universal and Unconditional Love. Agate is a reminder that we are love and compassion in action.
In general, Agates carry a quiet energy that works on the subtle bodies, and are great for achieving stability and balance in many aspects of one`s life. Agates tend to work behind the scenes on the cause, instead of the symptom, of an issue. Agate is believed to improve mental functions and can help where issues of clarity and stability are concerned. Agate is also helpful in overcoming negative emotions by bringing love into the chakras. Although they work very slowly and deliberately, this gentle nature of Agate helps them to have a lasting impact.
Buddha Symbolism:-
Because Buddha is not merely a name but also a title, sculptures of Buddha are meant to symbolise the process by which one can get a comprehensive and profound understanding of life. Hence not only do the statues and images of Buddha serve as physical representations or depictions of how Buddha appeared in his physical form, but they also serve as symbols of Buddha's teachings, good fortune, inner peace, and the motivating force that should be present in every human being.
Buddhism is consistently ranked among the most followed faiths in every region of the world. Buddhism, which was founded by Gautama Buddha on the Indian subcontinent between the 5th and 6th century B.C., quickly spread throughout Asia and is now the predominant religion in many Asian nations, including Japan, Thailand, Burma, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Tibet, to name just a few.
Buddhism has emerged as one of the most prominent religions in the world. The Buddha's teachings are responsible for this rise in popularity. I am not going to delve deeply into the teachings of the Buddha as it is complex and there are many subtleties that I do not wish to misspeak.
This is a very, very basic summary:- Buddhist teachings revolve around the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path, both of which aim to guide individuals towards enlightenment and the cessation of suffering. The Four Noble Truths explain the nature of suffering, its causes, the possibility of its end, and the path to achieve it. The Eightfold Path provides a practical framework for living a life of mindfulness, compassion, and wisdom, ultimately leading to liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
