This specimen weighs 34g and measures 2cm x 2cm x 1.5cm.

These beautiful Pyrite Specimens are from the famous Renison Bell mine, North Dundas, Zeehan Mining District, West Coast Municipality, Tasmania, Australia. In 2022 there was a discovery deep in the mine of these unusually formed Pyrite Specimens.

Unfortunately even though the quantity was significant there was no organised specimen collection and the majority of pieces on the market were salvaged from the waste dumps. Whilst various formations of Pyrite have been found at this location it is the loosely formed spherical shapes with naturally curved edges from the 2022 find that are most sort after from this location.

The two smaller specimens have a more traditional shape but have very etched, curved edges. All sides of the cubes are heavily etched giving a very clear depiction of each face growing in a different direction. Whilst this growth habit in Pyrite cubes is by no means unique to this location I personally have yet to see this growth habit so clearly displayed in Pyrite cubes from any other location.

The larger pieces show the rough naturally formed sphere shapes due to the massing together of many altered cubes with curved edges being compressed together. Due to this formation, and collection process many of the pieces from this discovery are in fairly rough shape. In my opinion these specimens are some of the best quality that I have seen available.

The Renison Bell Mine, is a large underground tin mine, one of the largest in the world. Operated nearly continuously since 1890; since 2004 owned by Metals X Ltd.

The Renison Tin lode, 12 km NE of Zeehan, was discovered in 1890 by George Renison Bell. With a total resource of over 40 Mt of about 1% Sn, this turned out to be one of the world’s largest known primary Tin deposits. In its early years it was an alluvial field, hard rock mining began about 1900, but large scale production at Renison did not commence until about 1965 when the price of tin increased sharply and the operation was taken over by Consolidated Goldfields Ltd. In 1996, the $34 million Rendeep project was implemented to access deeper ore reserves.

The mine was purchased by Murchison United in 1998 and by Bluestone Mines Tasmania Pty Ltd in 2004. Low tin prices closed the mine in 2005, but it was re-opened by Metals X Ltd in July 2008. In its 1965-2005 heyday the Renison mine was the largest underground tin mine in southern hemisphere, yielding over 2 million tonnes of ore to date.

The name Pyrite originated with the Greek word pyr or pyros which means fire. It was named that because it gives off sparks when hit against any hard surface

Early use of pyrite dates back to ancient Mesoamerica when the Mayans polished slabs of the mineral rock and used them as mirrors. It was also carved into masks and figurines by the Ancient Mayans and Aztecs. The Mayans traded pyrite mirrors with the Anasazi, possibly as far back as 600 A.D.

North American Indians revered pyrite crystals for their incredible powers. They used pyrite medicinally, for divination and to impart magical power while reciting incantations. The pyrite crystals were often carved into amulets and worn as jewelry.

During the 1500's and 1600's, pyrite was used in firearms to create a spark when the weapon was fired. People developed an appreciation for pyrite in jewelry in the 1800's. Pyrite crystals were most often faceted, put in silver settings and called marcasite. Pyrite was used in lithium batteries and radio receivers during the 20th century.
