This dark green rough material is also sourced from the vein near the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Each piece in these groups contains one or more of a number of associated minerals including Clear Quartz, Almandine Garnet, Staurolite, Hornblende and Corundum.

Named in 1789 by Abraham Gottlieb Werner from the Greek word "kyanos", meaning "blue," the common colour of the species. The French spelling, "Cyanite", was commonly used by mineralogists through much of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Kyanite is a polymorphic aluminium-silicate mineral that has the same chemical formula as the minerals andalusite and sillimanite, Al2SiO5. The atomic structures of these minerals differ slightly as do other physical properties. Kyanite is also known by the names of Disthene and Rhaeticite. It has a translucent look and comes in shades of blue, (the most common colour), but also green, black, and orange.
