This specimen weighs 26g and measures 5cm x 2cm x 2cm and was sourced from block 14, open cut, South Mine, Broken Hill New South Wales, Australia.

The South Mine was established as The Broken Hill South Silver Mining Co Ltd in 1885 and covers the central area of the Broken Hill line of lode, approximately 4 km in length, with the boundaries defined by two roads that connect the main part of the city of Broken Hill with the south district. The South Mine took over the original leases held by BHP when they left in the 1940s and was officially closed in 1972.

I have secured three of these interesting specimens of Calcite on Goethite from Daye County, Huangshi Prefecture, Hubei Province, China. This area is a well known mineralised zone that produces a variety of materials for collectors and several commercial mining operations operate in the area.

Calcite:-

Calcite is clear, whitish, or pale grey, but can take on different shades of gray, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, brown, or even black. This is due to microscopic quantities of other minerals or metals contained within the crystal matrix which makes the energy shift and it takes on unique characteristics.

Calcite is a family of calcium carbonates that occurs in a wide range of colors and formations. Most commonly it occurs in opaque masses but it can occur in a wide array of crystalline habits. Calcite is a soft mineral, with a Mohs hardness of 3. Because of its relative softness it is often carved or polished. Rough pieces are usually given an acid bath which softens the rough edges and give the stones a silky sheen.
