This beautiful variety of quartz contains fern-like inclusions of iron, manganese, hematite and other metallic oxides that grow in a fractal pattern.  The word “Dendrite” comes from the Greek word “Dendron” meaning tree.  The quartz is typically clear in colour with black, brown and yellow to red tree like inclusions, displaying a little scene of nature.

As the quartz crystals grows over very long periods of geological time, tiny fissures form along a horizontal plane within the crystal.  Colourful minerals, such as black or brown, manganese and hematite from the neighbouring host rock enter into the crystal via these tiny fissures.  These minerals spread out in a pattern very similar to tree branches or ferns, leading to the common misconception that these are actually fossil inside the Quartz.

The crystal habit of Quartz Crystals is hexagonal which grows in a large variety of formations. Crystal Quartz exhibits the property of piezoelectricity, by which it can transform mechanical energy (eg pressure) into electromagnetic energy and vice versa. Quartz crystals are the most common and abundant in the world, comprising the largest and most diverse family in the mineral kingdom.

Clear Quartz, pure silicon dioxide, is also called Rock Crystal or Ice Crystal, from the Greek word “krystallos”, meaning “ice”, because crystal was believed to be water frozen so hard it could never thaw. The Navajo believed it to be Clear Quartz that first caused the Sun to cast its light upon the world.
