This specimen weighs 24g and measures 3.5cm x 2cm x 2cm.

This specimen is Datolite on Axinite -Fe, (Ferroaxinite) and was sourced from the Colebrook Hill Mine, Rosebery, Tasmania, Australia. The area is located on the West Coast and is about 90 km southwest of Burnie and 200 km northwest of Hobart

This location has produced Australia's best ferroaxinite specimens, some of which are world class. The deposit occurs in an unusual rock type, sometimes described as a limurite or axinite-hornfels. The rock has formed because boron-rich solutions from an underlying granite reacted with limestone or other reactive calcium-rich rock types. The mine was originally worked for copper, but minor silver, gold, tin, lead, zinc and tungsten minerals are also present. The deposit is very complex and of great mineralogical interest, and is presently being worked for specimen minerals, most of which need to be acid-treated to dissolve the enclosing calcite.

Datolite:-

Named in 1806 by the Danish-Norwegian geologist, Jens Esmark (1762-1839) from the Greek δατεῖσθαι for "to divide", in reference to the granular texture of massive varieties. Commonly formed by low to moderate temperature hydrothermal, metamorphic or volcanic processes, especially skarns; also amygdular basalts and some low-grade metamorphic rocks?

The structure of datolite consists of sheets of four- and eight-membered rings of corner-sharing, alternating (HBO4) and (SiO4) tetrahedra, classifying it as a phyllo-borosilicate. The majority of Datolite is in massive form or nodules and not crystalline. From this location in particular however the Datolite characteristically tends to occur in glassy, faintly greenish, wedge-shaped crystals with odd-shaped faces seemingly placed at random.

Axinite:-

Axinite is the name given to a group of rare borosilicate minerals (Manganaxinite, Magnesioaxinite, Ferroaxinite, and Tinzenite) that crystallize in the form of extruding tabular crystals off a rock matrix (usually Orthoclase or Granite). The most common form on the market is Ferroaxinite, which refers to the high Iron content within the chemical body. This elemental inclusion directly affects the color of the stone, resulting in a light black, brown, and grey.

Axinite was first discovered in 1797 by the famed French mineralogist Rene Just Huey. He chose to name it after the Greek word “axine” meaning “ax”, in reference to the long bladed crystals that resemble an axe.
