This specimen weighs 248g and measures 7cm x 6cm x 5cm.

This stunning material is from the Hongquizhen Quarry in Meigu County, Liangshan Yi, Sichuan Province, China. This area is also known as Hongxi Town, which was previously a township level area under Meigu County.

It was very difficult to capture the true beauty of these pieces and the unusual blue Schiller like effect when looking at the sparkling pitch black Babingtonite through some of the Botryoidal Calcite crystals. Material from this location contains a mix of  Babingtonite, Prehnite, Pyrite, several generations and habits of Calcite and small water clear Quartz Points growing on a Quartz based matrix. I have selected a range of pieces that include all or some of these elements and included each in the description.

Babingtonite:-

This mineral owes its name to the Irish physicist and mineralogist William Babington. Usually massive, forming encrustations, it sometimes occurs as small, shiny dark brown to greenish black crystals. It grows inside cavities in volcanic rocks like basalt, often alongside zeolite minerals. Although, unlike many Zeolites it has no commercial value, when It forms sharp, shiny, bladed crystals they stand out against pastel background minerals like Prehnite or Quartz making them very appealing for collectors.

Babingtonite from Sichuan, China, is a highly prized mineral specimen famous for its sharp, jet-black, lustrous crystals growing on soft green prehnite and clear Calcite. The primary source for these world-class pieces is the Hongquizhen Quarry (also spelled Hongxizhen) in Meigu County, Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan Province?

Before the Sichuan discoveries, the world's best babingtonite came from Massachusetts, USA. The Chinese deposits completely shocked the mineralogical community by producing the largest and finest crystals ever recorded for the species.

Clear Quartz:-

Quartz is a silicon dioxide mineral with a hardness of 7. Its crystal system is hexagonal which grows in a large variety of formations.
