What a great combination, common Opal and Petrified Wood
Opalized wood is a type of Petrified Wood that is composed of opal, rather than chalcedony or another mineral material. It almost always consists of common Opal, without play-of-colour, but rare instances of petrified wood composed of precious opal are known.
One of the most common and best geologic environments for the formation of petrified wood is a forest buried by a volcanic ashfall. In this situation the ash buries the plants and protects them from decay and insect attack. The ash also serves as an abundant source of easily dissolved silica, which will be carried into the wood by moving groundwater where it precipitates in cavities and replaces the solid woody materials.
Common Opal:
Opal is a hydrated silica mineral which comprises of microscopic spheres of silica which are bound together with water and silica and there are two forms of Opal, common and precious. Common Opal is normally opaque the colour range including white, blue, pink, yellow, yellow/orange, brown or black, and all could contain dendrite formations.
Common opal is found in many of the same environments as precious opal. It is often found associated with volcanic activity - especially ashfalls. It is also commonly found in sedimentary rocks underlying areas with an arid climate. There, the minimal rainfall dissolves silica during infiltration and deposits it at depth in fractures and cavities.
Common Opals are magnificent for metaphysical purposes, vibrating at a lower frequency than the transparent or fiery Opals, and provide gentle, nurturing support for the emotional body. Generally the energy is gentle and easily handled by those who are overwhelmed by higher vibrational stones, this can be very grounding and buffering. Opals are exceptional at balancing energy for those who are burdened with stress, assisting them to relax.
They help alleviate worry, chronic stress and depression, and are perfect antidotes for sleeplessness and nightmares, and healing subconsciously held pain. Common Opal combines Earth and Water energies, and may be used to balance the male/female energies within the body, and to both align and balance the chakras. Stimulating the proper flow of energy through the physical body, Common Opal facilitates attunement with the higher self and the ethereal realm, bringing a calm, centred mind for prayer and meditation. These lovely stones can attract angelic beings and are ideal gifts to leave for them in some unseen spot.
Also useful to healer's whose work tends to be empathic as well, as it supports the ability to move from client to client with more ease with just a few moments with the green opal between sessions.
Petrified Wood:
Petrified Wood comes from the Greek root petro, which means rock or stone, with literal meaning ‘wood turned into stone’.
It’s the name given to the fossilized remains of terrestrial vegetation.
Petrified Wood is the result of a tree turning into stone through the process of permineralization. All the organic materials of the tree have been replaced with silicate minerals, usually a quartz, while maintaining the wood’s original structure.
Unlike other kinds of fossils that are compressions or impressions, Petrified Wood is a three-dimensional representation of the original organic material. The petrifaction process happens underground, when wood starts to get covered by sediments. It’s preserved at first due to lack of oxygen. Mineral-rich water that’s flowing through the sediments deposits minerals in the tree’s cells. As the tree’s lignin and cellulose start to decay, a stone mould also begins to form
These stones were revered in the past as they were thought to contain the knowledge from the tree that they were created from. Ancient people thought these stones had magical qualities. This was possibly due to the reverence that real trees held within many cultures. Fossilized Wood is created naturally in the earth from ancient trees that became fossilized over a very long period.
They are beneficial healing crystals for you to utilise as from this prolonged process energy was embodied within these stones that brings patience through on-going growth.
Many people like to use Petrified Wood to help connect with the energies of the Earth. Petrified Wood is a great way for city dwellers to keep the vibrations of nature near in the concrete jungle. Meditation with Petrified Wood may take you back to connect with a time when your Spirit was cradled by Nature. Petrified Wood encourages people to respect and look after their environment, ever finding ways to live simply, in harmony with the Spirit of the planet. Carry Petrified Wood with you when you feel disconnected from Nature.
Petrified Wood is a stone to assist with grounding and stabilising one’s emotions. A true stone of transformation securing the base chakra by grounding oneself whilst enabling opening of the third eye chakra raising one’s awareness.
Being the only crystals that bridges the mineral kingdom with the plant kingdom Petrified Wood blesses us with a unique combination of earth energies.
