These gorgeous Diopside crystals are from Yinnietharra, Western Australia - a location world famous for Dravite, both black and brown.

This specimen weighs approximately 16g and measures 3cm x 3cm x 2cm.

Located 13 kilometres north-west of Morrissey Hill, on an isolated low hill west of the Thirty One River. This is the only occurrence of gem quality diopside in Western Australia making them extremely sought after by collectors.

Well known specimen miner David Vaughan discovered the deposit.

It is a calc-silicate lens containing massive diopside overlain by a silcrete regolith caprock. The highest concentration of gem quality diopside is found in the caprock, which through weathering processes have been cemented into the silcrete. The largest crystal found was doubly terminated but fractured, 59 x 35 x 24mm, with most recovered being around 20mm in length. Much of the material was faceted.

It is thought the Diopside may contain some Hedenbergite, due to the gemstone's high refractive index and specific gravity at the location (1.675-1.704 and 3.32). The crystals may contain inclusions (possible amphibole), 'healed' fractures are orientated with cleavage planes, cleavages contain secondary iron staining, and growth tubules are evident.

Diopside:-

Diopside is a magnesium calcium metamorphic silicate mineral that crystallizes in the form of grainy masses and small prismatic (twinning) shards. It is a member of the Pyroxene group of minerals and was first discovered by Jose Bonifacio de Andrada e Silva in 1806 (he is also credited for finding Andradite, Petalite, and Spodumene). He chose to name it after the Greek word “dis” meaning double, “opse” meaning face. This was chosen in reference to its growing habit which can occasionally form duel prismatic crystal faces.

Diopside can be colorless but it most often a bottle green, brownish green or light green. Bright green diopside is commonly known as Chrome Diopside. The reason behind the naming is simple - Chrome Diopside is coloured by chromium, the same element that gives Emerald its rich green colour. This beautiful intense green colour and its high refraction give the gem great brilliance and life.

Chrome diopside is used for encouraging awareness and creative vision. It improves one’s mind and helps to learn better.
