This specimen contains a rich vein of Chalcopyrite through the centre and on end displays a nice growth of pale pink Rhodochrosite. The specimen weighs 150g and measures 7cm x 4cm x 3cm.

The Renison Bell Mine, is a large underground tin mine, one of the largest in the world. Operated nearly continuously since 1890; since 2004 owned by Metals X Ltd.

The Renison Tin lode, 12 km NE of Zeehan, was discovered in 1890 by George Renison Bell. With a total resource of over 40 Mt of about 1% Sn, this turned out to be one of the world’s largest known primary Tin deposits. In its early years it was an alluvial field, hard rock mining began about 1900, but large scale production at Renison did not commence until about 1965 when the price of tin increased sharply and the operation was taken over by Consolidated Goldfields Ltd. In 1996, the $34 million Rendeep project was implemented to access deeper ore reserves. The mine was purchased by Murchison United in 1998 and by Bluestone Mines Tasmania Pty Ltd in 2004. Low tin prices closed the mine in 2005, but it was re-opened by Metals X Ltd in July 2008. In its 1965-2005 heyday the Renison mine was the largest underground tin mine in southern hemisphere, yielding over 2 million tonnes of ore to date.

Rhodochrosite:-

Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate mineral of the Calcite group. It occurs mainly as massive aggregates or in granular, botryoidal, nodular or stalactitic forms, though rare, transparent rhombohedral and scalenohedral crystals are found. Rhodochrosite forms in hydro thermal veins of copper, lead and silver mines, and as secondary deposits in sedimentary layers of manganese oxide.

The name Rhodochrosite comes from the Greek rhodos, meaning “rose,” and khros, meaning “colour,” and refers to its vivid pink to rose-red colour. It has a vitreous and pearly lustre, often banded in layers ranging from white or light pink, to those that are nearly red and opaque. Though most Rhodochrosite is in the pink to red colour range, it can also be yellowish, orange or brown. It is often confused with the manganese silicate, Rhodonite, but is distinctly softer with white banding, rather than the black veins of manganese oxide present in Rhodonite.

Rhodochrosite is also referred to as Raspberry Spar, Manganese Spar, and most notably as Inca Rose (Rosa del Inca or Rosinca), as the Incas believed Rhodochrosite was the blood of their ancestral rulers turned to stone. It is the National Gemstone of Argentina, where some of the most important deposits are mined, and is the State Mineral of Colorado, USA, where the Sweet Home Mine near Alma and nearby localities produce some of the rarest and most beautiful red Rhodochrosite in the world.

In massive form, Rhodochrosite’s pink and white bands are extremely attractive and often used in semi-precious jewellery, decorative stones or carved into figurines, while stalactitic forms are cross-cut in slices to display their unique concentric bands. Fine transparent crystals are rare and costly, sometimes faceted into gems for collectors, however the softness and brittleness limit it as a gemstone for everyday usage. Rhodochrosite’s main use is as an ore of manganese, a key component of low-cost stainless steel formulations and certain aluminium alloys.

Known as the Stone of the Compassionate Heart, Rhodochrosite symbolizes selfless love, moving one beyond mere empathy but stirring one to action on others’ behalf. Rhodochrosite, however, directs that love first toward the self for the specific purpose of emotional healing. Chalcopyrite:-

Chalcopyrite was the mineral upon which Bronze Age civilizations were built. Within the last century, it also became the mineral foundation for our modern electrical age. Our primary source of copper, chalcopyrite’s name comes from the Greek words ‘chalkos’ and ‘pyrites’, which respectively mean ‘copper’ and ‘striking fire’. With its metallic lustre and bright golden colour, chalcopyrite can fool people into thinking it is gold. It is one of two minerals, the other being pyrite, that are commonly known as ‘fool’s gold’.

Chalcopyrite is a striking, bright yellow, metallic mineral that occurs in nearly all sulphide deposits. Initially, it may be easy to confuse chalcopyrite with pyrite, but the two can be distinguished by their relative hardness and chalcopyrite’s iridescent tarnish. Pyrite is the harder of the two and cannot be easily scratched by a nail, unlike chalcopyrite. In its massive variety, chalcopyrite is one of the minerals most often mistaken for gold. While gold is ductile and malleable, chalcopyrite is brittle and will shatter if struck.

When Chalcopyrite is exposed to acid, its colour palette changes to deep purple, blues, violets, and yellows. This treated Chalcopyrite is what you will find at most shows and crystal shops, and is commonly referred to as “Peacock Ore”. Technically “ Peacock Ore” is another mineral called Bornite, which naturally tarnishes to these colours, but it quite rare.

Chalcopyrite is one of the strongest healing stones in the mineral kingdom and is known as the chakra stone.
