This piece weighs 24g and measures 3cm x 2cm x 2cm.

A beautiful group of combination specimens with glassy translucent thick tabular amber coloured crystals of Baryte on a matrix of dark purple botryoidal translucent Fluorite. These pieces are from the Xiefang mine, Ruijin Co., Ganzhou, Jiangxi, China, which is a Volcanic-hydrothermal Fluorite deposit (10 km long vein system). This location is generally considered to have produced some of the best examples of both Baryte and Fluorite specimens and certainly the best location for this combination. This Fluorite is fluorescent under both longwave and shortwave ultraviolet light.

Note:- Although frequently spelled Barite in the US and some other places, the official IMA spelling is Baryte. 

Names in 1800 by Dietrich Ludwig Gustav Karsten from the Greek βαρύς, (Barys), meaning heavy. This name is in response to barite's high specific gravity of 4.5, which is exceptional for a nonmetallic mineral. Whilst Baryte is not a particularly rare mineral, top quality tabular crystals like these most definitely are with the crystals growing parallel to one another, or nearly so. Baryte is a mineral composed of barium sulfate (BaSO4). The high specific gravity of barite makes it suitable for a wide range of industrial, medical, and manufacturing uses. \n\nBaryte is the primary ore of Barium, which is used to make a wide variety of Barium compounds. Some of these are used for x-ray shielding, as Barite has the ability to block x-ray and gamma-ray emissions. Barite compounds are also used in diagnostic medical tests. Baryte is used to make high-density concrete to block x-ray emissions in hospitals, power plants, and laboratories and is also used in the oil and gas industry with relation to drilling.
