These beautiful Stibnite specimens are from Fenghuang Co, Xiangxi, Hunnan, China. This piece weighs 12g and measures 3.5cm x 3cm x 1.5cm.

Stibnite is a sulfide mineral and is the principal ore of Antimony. From the Greek, stimmi or stibi, "antimony," thence to the Latin, stibium. Also from the Greek anthemon, "flower" in allusion to the form of crystal druses. Lead-gray to silvery gray in color, it often develops a black, iridescent tarnish on exposure to light. It normally occurs as elongated, prismatic crystals that may be bent or twisted. These crystals are often marked by striations parallel to the prism faces. Stibnite typically forms coarse, irregular masses or radiating sprays of needlelike crystals, but it can also be granular or massive. 

A widespread mineral, in a large range of quality, Stibnite occurs in hydrothermal veins, hot-spring deposits and replacement deposits that form at low temperatures (up to 400°F/200°C). It is often associated with Galena Cinnabar, Realgar, Orpiment, Pyrite and Quartz. It is found in massive aggregates in Granite and Gneiss rocks. 

Stibnite is used to manufacture matches, fireworks, and percussion caps for firearms. 

Other uses are in the pyrotechnic industries, namely in the glitter & fountain mixtures. The Needle-like crystals or "Chinese Needle", are used in glitter compositions & white pyrotechnic stars. The "Dark Pyro" version is used in flash powders to increase their sharpness & sensitivity. It is also a component of modern day safety matches.

A paste of Stibnite powder in fat & other materials, was used as far back as 3100 BC since protodynastic ancient Egypt as a medication & a cosmetic. This paste was known as Kohl & has been used my many cultures predominantly as eye makeup.
