Very hard to photograph due to the extremely reflective Mica, but some angles are better than others and you can clearly see the Dravite Crystals.

There are around twenty major named sites for minerals in the region, although the total list would be far longer. While most are on Yinnietharra Station, some of the outlying deposits are found on neighbouring Mt Phillip, Eudamulla, Bidgemia, and Mooloo Downs Stations.

** Please note this Phlogopite Mica Matrix is quite brittle on some pieces and whilst I will pack safely some damage may occur in transit **

The Yinnietharra Dravite Mine consists of two pits 1km apart roughly parallel on strike north-north west. The majority of crystals found in this location are naturally double terminated. Brown dravite occurs at the south pit, and black Dravite, (previously incorrectly labelled as Black Tourmaline), in the north pit. In more recent years, it has been established that all tourmaline in this area is black dravite, with an MgO content of 9.85%.

A well-known locality for large and well-formed dark brown and black dravite crystals this deposit was discovered in 1918. The Dravite crystals form in Mica Schists which help protect the crystals. Most of the brown dravite specimens on the market come from the mining period (1968-1971), with crystals found sporadically within pods.

Mining for muscovite used in the electrical industry occurred on Yinnietharra station at several sites between 1922 and 1946, beryl and columbite from 1942 to 1965, and gem specimen mining after this till around 1990. Minor rare earth, uranium bearing and lithium minerals are present but have never been mined to any extent. No mining on the field has been large scale.

Tourmaline is the name given to a large group of boron silicate minerals that share a common prismatic crystal structure and similar physical properties. This crystalline boron silicate mineral can be found compounded with elements such as aluminium, magnesium, iron, potassium, and lithium.

Because Tourmalines vary so greatly in chemical composition, we see the widest range of colours and colour combinations than in any other mineral group. Colours range from yellow, orange and pink to green, blue, brown and black. Tourmaline has 3 species - Dravite, Schorl and Elbaite and has 14 varieties. Tourmalines are further named by their colours and are often multicoloured. Tourmalines are naturally pyroelectric and piezoelectric and some are pleochroic.

Dravite is a complex sodium magnesium iron boro-aluminium silicate hydroxide in the Tourmaline group found in granites and granitic pegmatites, high temperature hydrothermal veins and metamorphic rocks.

The origin of the name comes from the Drava River area in common day Slovenia, in which the stone was first reported back in 1884. Gustav Tschermak, who was a professor of Mineralogy and Petrography at the University of Vienna, coined the term “Dravite”.Its colour ranges from dark brown, to a light brown-yellow with semi-translucent crystals almost resembling Smoky Quartz. The best, and presumably rarest Dravite specimens come from the mines located in Yinnietharra, Australia. Other localities include mainly Brazil, Mexico, and Canada.

Dravite is a very strong grounding stone that raises one’s stamina, life force, and protective energies. Our root and heart chakras become open and active when working with or carrying Dravite daily. As your heart begins to open, this stone shows that it’s okay to allow such feelings and emotions to flow freely throughout your body. Dravite urges us to fully root down into the physical plane with an open heart that is eager to love, yet always protected. Its a very protective stone over your aura, and provides a barrier between other people’s energy and your own. We recommend carrying this with you if you know you’re going into an environment where there may be a lot of sick people or even strangers.

Dravite works specifically with the heart chakra to provide self-healing and rejuvenating energies. By opening up your heart and allowing pain and grief to be faced, only then will one be able to truly move forward on the road to recovery. This stone is here to help you face those emotions with an abundance of love and protective energies. For anyone dealing with sudden trauma or grief, we really recommend meditating with a piece of Dravite and carrying it with you daily. Be sure to cleanse and clear this stone regularly as it works in pulling out negative vibrations, and may end up carrying some itself. A simple saging will do the job!

Combining Dravite and Rose Quartz in meditation may enhance the rejuvenating and healing energies on ones heart. This combination provides emotional healing and gentle release of all bound up stress within. Trying placing the Rose Quartz over your heart when meditating to feel its vibrations even more.
